Anyone with experience with this please chime in. I have a donor Remington 700 but it shoots so good I am considering buying a savage and building it from there. I like both so its not a question of remington vs. savage...just looking for opinions on the caliber.

Call David Manson reamers and have them make you a 6.5-280 Ackley Improved reamer. It's the same one they made for me. By starting with the 280 brass, you can use any of the shorter brass like .30-06, .25-06 and .270 Winchester. It will also give you a laser beam of a rifle. Extremely flat shooting. Get yourself a long barrel, have it chambered and do a good barrel break in and then send it out for meloniting (sp). That will give you performance way above the 6.5x55 Swede (a cartridge I also love).

I reload for a buddy that has a 6.5-06 ack. Right now he gets 139 scenars to 3100 f\s. Its a very accurate cartridge. I neck up 25-06 brass and fireform. Like any ackley, it is a pain in the ass to fireform. But it is a very flat shooting round.

142 SMK at 3000+ feet per second without breaking a sweat; run a Winchester brand .25-06 case through a 6.5-06 die and load; 5 rounds in the magazine, feeds like a champ. Whats not to love about a 6.5-06? Not the best barrel life, but you can't have everything.

Good luck

Re: Considering a 6.5-06 build..

My 6.5-06 pushed 140 Bergers to 3175 and over 3200 if I wanted to throw out the brass.

The 130's would do 3225 without pushing too hard, I could literally shoot them fast enough from an 8twist to blow them up.

Barrel life is generally better than a 6.5-284 for a couple reasons, even though the shoulder angle is less than optimal. The short freebore and long neck on the -06 case helps substantially.

I have a friend who was spotting for guys in a match and got used to seeing 308's and 260's at 1100yd. His comment on the 260 was "wow that's flat"

My first round from a 6.5-06 he goes "Oh shit, Tom come here and watch this... look at that trace".

ETA: Barrel life for mine was about 1500rd before it opened up from 1/3 MOA to 3/4MOA and it happened over about 50 rds.

I chopped the barrel down and rechambered it in 6.5 Creedmoor and it's been shooting in the 2's and 3's for the last 1100rd still.

ok after much research and discussion i am going for the build. have decided on a douglas medium contour barrel on a remington 700 action thats already had a trigger job. the only other thing to consider is a stock.

What you want is a 6.5/284.

Ballistic equivalent but in a Long Action you get better bullet seating versatility. The 35deg shoulder is better than a 40deg.

Lapua brass. Shorter case gives more uniform ignition as powder remains consistently packed. Long Action gives you full case capacity with no bullet protrusion below neck.

No reason to favor the longer case over the shorter if capacity is equal.
