Current setup is a .308, 24" Remmy SPS with YHM can. Barrel contour is a bit light (#4ish) and I wouldn't mind having a shorter barrel. I'm all set up with match grade dies, etc etc for .308, so I am kinda shy about changing cartridge.

Option 1: leave it as is.

Option 2: rebarrel to a 18" 1:10 twist schilling or kreiger bull barrel. Would get the action trued out while I'm at it.

Option 3: rebarrel to a 18" or 20" 5r. Would get the action trued out while I'm at it.

Option 4: rebarrel to a different cartridge/caliber

Option 5: you tell me

I usually stay under 800 yrds, but occasionally venture out beyond. Accuracy isn't much a problem (if I do my part) but recoil control on that light barrel isn't the greatest, and the 24" barrel with the can is a bit obtuse.

Open to all and any opinions! thanks in advance!

Re: Considering Rebarreling

If you are going to go through the expense of blueprinting and re-barreling. I would just build another rifle from scratch, or pick up a new or used one similar to your specs. For some folk the passion is in the build, so as soon as their rifle is complete, they move on to the next build. You can see some of these rifles pass through the sale thread.

You know that custom work takes a while, so in the interim you can still shoot your current setup.

If you decide to stick with 308, you can have the new rifle built to the shorter field/ tactical comp profile you desire, and convert your current setup to a lightweight hunter.

If not you can always try a new cartridge like the 260 or 6.5. The choices are endless.

Re: Considering Rebarreling

What barrel would give me optimal velocity for an 18 incher?

I'm quoted at $400 (labor only) for truing, turning, and threading a blank barrel by a reputable local smith. The question is what barrel?

I know I've read lowlight talking about fast and slow barrels, and by his standards my previous one was definetly slow, which is not surprising given that it is a factory rem tube.

Re: Considering Rebarreling

Go with a short barrel and trued action...it's what I did and am waiting to get it back!

The shorty thread was filled win happy owners!
