Hey guys. I have been toying with the idea of putting a suppressor on my 308. The barrel is a 26 inch heavy barrel. I dont know anything about the ATF form, how much it cost (or where to take it) to thread the barrel, or what kind of suppressor to get. I would mainly shoot it supersonic but I might look into factory subsonic ammo. I would reload but it sounds like alot of work.

Im really looking for a general number here. How much overall. Thanks

Re: Considering suppressor for my rem700 help

How much were you thinking?

It breaks down like this:

$100-$150 for threading the barrel + shipping
$600-$1200(or more)for a can
$200 tax stamp

Bottom line is that right around a grand is the lowest you're going to get for a suppressor.

Re: Considering suppressor for my rem700 help

..

Most don't, its not obvious. I would agree with you, but recommend that rather than stop the process cold, learn as much as you can and see if you can get behind one. Once you do, a really great one, well...I think you will understand why many don't shoot rude anymore.

There is more than a spoonfull of thought that goes into a great can. To some extent they are all overpriced, but even within that statement, you actually get whay you pay for in the best cans as compared to the lower end. They should be a lifetime investment as there is essentially no used market for can.

Hope you find a way to hear some.

Re: Considering suppressor for my rem700 help

And is it bad if I just shoot supersonic ammo through one? Its kinda hard to find subsonic 308 ammo and I would like to keep the same range capabilities.

Re: Considering suppressor for my rem700 help

Centerfire suppressors, last an extremely long time, We are talking on the order of probably 20-50k rounds. You would be more likely to wear out the threads on the can before the internals. Centerfire cartridges such as 308 have extremely clean burning powders so the cans really dont gather that much junk inside, thats why most are sealed and cant be taken appart. Do you go through more than one or two barrells in a year? if not then it will likely last you short of a lifetime as long as its SS.

Probably better for the can when shooting supersonic since those powders are the cleanest. I have been shooting some subsonic 308 and have noticed the powder(trail boss) is somewhat dirtier than regular full power powder like rl15 or varget. I wouldnt really worry about it, just buy one and use it, youll be glad you got one and it well last short of forever.

Re: Considering suppressor for my rem700 help

Buy once, cry once. Buying quality gear will result in better performance, POI repeatability, better sound reduction, and so on.

For the money......... I like YHM 7.62 Phantom. Its heavy! But QD and built like a tank. Its a good starter can for most new comers.

You say that until you get your first taste, then you will want another suppressor rather than a rifle and pistol.

Where in NC are you? There are a ton of us here in NC. If you include a city/general area in your profile, I'm sure most of us would be willing to meet up and let you hear some of our gear. That would do several things for you.
1-You could hear some great gear first hand;
2-You could check out and handle that gear and see what it is that costs so much and why they cost so much;
3-You could make several new friends and get some great first hand advice as to why they bought what they bought;
4-Worst of all, you would most likely catch the fever/addiction that is suppressors for yourself:)

I know I have 7 with 2 more in-process. I am in the far west end of the state. There are some really super guys like Dr. Phil who are closer to the middle/eastern part of the state who have a number of cans. I would be willing to bet any of the guys on here would love to meet up and let you check out their stuff.

RJ1670

Good break down unless your wife finds out that you purchased a few cans.

Cost to have her forget ~ Approximately $375
(Don't ask

)

I recommend going with the detachable cans with a muzzle break from Surefire or YHM.

How do you have experience with these suppressors if they are not legal to fire thru in WA?
