I've inherited a Weatherby Mark V 30-06 rifle from my Godfather. I already have a Weatherby Vanguard 30-06 that shoots extremely well, but I want to keep it as my deer hunting gun. The Mark V is a good shooter as well, but I'd like to build a custom gun from it.

I know options are kinda limited with the Mark V, but this gun is special to me.

I'd like build some tactical precision rifle with the Mark V action.

Here is kinda what I'm after.

Mark V Custom Build

What possible calibers should I consider for this rifle? I'm thinking the .280 Remington would make a good long range gun and be able to use the action I have, but I'm open to other ideas. I reload, so caliber options are endless.

I was also thinking about .280 Ackley Improved.

What barrel makers should I consider?

Oh, and this is a semi rare Weatherby 30-06, because it has the 9 lug bolt and not the 6 lug bolt.

Any other input would be helpful. I'm not sure on a budget, but I'll probably build it over time. Not really in any hurry at the moment.

Re: Considering Weatherby Mark V Build

Be aware the Mark V wasn't designed for a honkin barrel. It's a skeleton of an action to compensate for the big bolt body and monster front bridge. Roy was a stalker and wanted something light enough to carry. You hang a 10 lbs barrel off the front of that action and you may get more flex than expected. Something to chew on.
