6300 square feet of gunmaking madness in the works. Hope to have trusses on the framework by friday. This is my new building.

Waiting till were dry shell to do the floor. 10" slab with in floor heating.

It'll have the same siding as the finished building in the other photo.

WOO HOO, can't wait for Sept to move in!

looks like some beautiful country out there. sounds like you should have plenty of room. that is a dream of mine, having a house and big ass shop well outside of town.

edit: are you going to do isolated thick slabs for your cnc equipment?

My guess would be motorcycle parts first, guns second.

    Chad,

Congratulations on getting this far, so far. I've been through that area a lot in the past (from IA/MN to MT) and I've always liked it. Had to say I liked Belle Fourche too.

    Good luck on this endeavor.

The slab will be 5 bag crete. 10" thick with 5/8" rebar done on a 10" grid. It's going to have in floor heating. Thought about trying to isolate the slabs for the machines but the costs associated with routing all that tubing around the slab makes it prohibitive. Since gun work really isn't that invasive(Not like I'm whackin on heavy castings or anything) I think it'll be ok. I was able to get pretty good finishes at Nesika and that floor was absolutely awful. 4"-5" with cracks and sags all over the place.

The only thing I'm really concerned about is when tuning an action or fitting a barrel. As for now I'm a one man band and both those processes depend on me baby sitting the machine. Meaning I can't do both simultaneously so I don't worry too much about transmitting vibration from one machine to the next.

I've heard two trains of thought regarding heating the floor. I personally think that controlling the temp will help the machines as it'll stay pretty constant. It sure is nice to have during the cold months. Warm feet are happy feet! Considering a lot of shops operate on slabs much less "robust" I'm not too concerned about the floor. -But I do know what your saying and I've seen big job shops that are set up this way. It's really cool for sure! I am friends with an Okuma guru and he's told me that they won't guarantee a new machine unless the floor is done that way. Not sure how true that is, but its what I was told.

It'll be nice to get this thing all done. I still have machines in storage that I've not been able to pull out and use yet. The extra room will be a big blessing.

Plans include a smaller building thats detached for painting, bluing, plating, etc. I don't want that crap in the main shop due to the fumes and mess. Bad enough needing the "dirty room" for grinders, sanders, etc.

Thanks guys. This'll be pretty cool when its all wrapped up.

Your trying to make everyone here jealous. Congrats on having a shop most of us can only dream of.

Thank's for all the great posts and pictures, I always enjoy them. I'll expect alot more after that shop is done.

I showed the owner of the shop {he hates computers} I work at your web site last week, he was very impressed. He worked with Bo Clerke about 30 years ago. He has a story about Bo having him turn some parts that made him sick. Turns out the material was DU. Bo knew it but didn't tell him until after he went to the doctor and found out he was hot as hell. The stories he has about Bo....

    Re: Construction. . .FINALLY!

The in floor heating is the BEST way to heat a home or building. No air movement required so no cooling effects to deal with. I would never have anything else to heat anyplace that I had to spend extended time in or live. Your rifles are the cat's meow. Never seen such precision work before and craftsmanship. It is obvious that you have incredible skills and passion for the work that you do Chad. Don't know why anyone would think that you would use that shop for anything other than turning out the finest rifle work that I have ever seen though? My hay is off to you.

Best of luck on the new shop. Hope to tool up there someday to drop in and maybe even have some of your fine work done for me

    Re: Construction. . .FINALLY!

I used hydronic heat in my floor in the shop, best move I could have made. I wish I would have used it in my house as well. I have not found any cracks in the concrete floor in my shop after 6 years. I installed my machines with a liftruck, it weighs nearly 10,000 # plus the machines which go from 2500# to about 6500# each. My floor was poured with 6 sack concrete plus fibre over wire mesh and PEX tubing, 6" thick.

Almost done! Floor is almost ready to pour. The big bike rally is upon us at the moment. That pretty much closes up the town due to the traffic.

I've got pics on my phone but no way to transfer to the puter.

I'll run out there when I get a break and snap some more pics.

Would sure like to stop in and see your shop when done, also some of your projects that reflect your expertise and skills. Hell if it has a roof on it you shoulda rented it out to 20-30 bikers, woulda fetched enough for a couple yds of mud

Hell a bit of urine, beer and other dna soaked into the fill would give you 'memories' when the heat was on
