What is a good contour for a .338 LM? I am looking at ordering a barrel and was thinking a #17 heavy varmint from Krieger. I see lots of guys using MTU's. The #17 and the MTU seem pretty similar dimensionally. Thoughts?

HV and MTU are very similar. I would look at Bruno's Shooter's Supply and see if they have an HV in stock - they usually do. You will have your barrel in about a week instead of 4-6 months for roughly the same price.

Thanks, thats exactly where I am looking. They have a HV and an MTU but the MTU is 100 bucks more. Not sure why it would be. I assume the Krieger barrels from Brunos are stainless and not chromoly. Can anyone confirm? If not I will just call on monday. Also, from what I understand, the 1-10 twist is good for both the 250 and 300 grain bullets? I will likely be using SMK's. Thanks guys.

They are stainless. I have an HV on one rifle and an MTU on another both in AICS stocks. You really can't tell much difference by looking at them and they both weigh about the same. I went HV because of the availability. Next one will probably be LV in .260ish.
