If a guy with no donor gun/action wanted a precision field-type rig for paper punching, steel banging, tactical competitions and hunting what would be more cost effective, a custom action or a worked over Remmy?

Thank You

Your biggest issue will be finding the donor action.

Price will depend on what you want done to the Remington, just true it or add a bunch of custom touches to the Remington. It also depends on what the smith will charge you to true the Remington action, some charge more then others.

+1 on what randy said.

if you don't want fancy stuff like a side bolt release, big ass bolt knob, fluted bolt, sako/m16 style extractor, etc a trued factory action may be good enough and bit cheaper. if you want all those things, or any of them really, then a custom action is going to have a cost advantage.

edit: one more thing, a factory action may or may not come with a trigger you are going to use. a custom will not come with a trigger at all. a factory action may come with a j lock and you will probably want to swap that out. a custom action will come with a firing pin that is good to go.

That's what I was thinking.

If I didn't have a Remmy action, then a custom it would be. The RSR actions would get my vote. For the quality and features they offer they are priced VERY competitively.

Re: Cost: Custom action vs. worked Remmy??

I have many "custom" Rem700's but if I could do it over I would definitely go for the custom action from the beginning. As you have this or that done to your rem it would have ended up saving both money and ALOT of time if I had just opted to go custom from the get go.

Re: Cost: Custom action vs. worked Remmy??

Seems like for what I want a custom would be the way to go. I would like the side bolt release, big knob, and fluted bolt and why pay for an action with a trigger I may not even use. The RSR is looking really good to me.

Check out the GA Precision Templar also. My main match rifle has one on it and I like it alot. Cost isn't too bad either.

Re: Cost: Custom action vs. worked Remmy??

Donor Action 400-500, you might get lucky and get one for less than 400
new recoil lug 35 delivered
true action 125-225
bolt knob 85-95 shipping both ways

Just using the low end thats 645 bucks, for a little bit more you can get a Stiller, Surgeon RSR, or upgrade your build from GAP to Georges Templer action, and as others have said a custom action rifle will retain its value.

Re: Cost: Custom action vs. worked Remmy??

The only reason I'm sticking with the stock Remmy on my build is that I already have a custom bolt knob I like,a Tubb Speedlock firing pin system, and I would rather spend the money on a Jewell Trigger. If I had to start from scratch, custom would have been the way to go.

Re: Cost: Custom action vs. worked Remmy??

Have you checked out the new Surgeon RSR? No integral scope rail or recoil lug but is comes with a .25" recoil lug that is double pinned and the Surgeon scope rail for it is $116 and it's double screwed and double pinned in and a one piece bolt with a changeable handle. Retail is $788. It comes short action only at this point. I'm offering a true Surgeon custom with Surgeon bottom metal (takes AI mags), Surgeon scope rail, Timney trigger, a Manners stock and Shilen Match barrel for $2850.
