I tried to true a bolt today and everything was going good until I tried to cleanup the bolt face. I used a small HSS boring bar but I don't think it was stiff enough. The bar chattered and and did not make a clean cut. I have never ground a tool before so I am not sure I can make the tools that have been shown on this forum. Has anybody used a boring bar with an indexable insert to cleanup the bolt face? I was also wondering what kinds of cutting tools you use to cut the bolt recess in the barrel. Thanks.

Re: Couple questions about bolt truing/chambering

For what it's worth to you, Brownells sells a HSS ground tool to do bolt faces. It won't stay sharp forever, so you'll have to learn to sharpen HSS eventually, which isn't far away from grinding your own. Just takes practice.

Re: Couple questions about bolt truing/chambering

I think this might be an easier and more accurate way to true up the bolt face. The tool has a bushing which screws into your receiver. The bushing supports a carbide burr which is turned against the face of the bolt to true it up to the axis of the barrel/receiver. Look on page 14/15 of the reamer catalog from Dave Manson Reamers. http://www.mansonreamers.com/Current%20catalog/2010January%20version.pdf
I've seen these tools used with good results and they are don't have issues with interrupted cuts like a lathe tool would. Most bolt faces are surface hardened which will play hell with HSS tooling. The carbide burr won't have the same issues.

Sharp,

Set the bolt back up and make sure it's a rigid setup. Bolt movemnet of any kind will net you chatter. Recut after looking at the link below.

Check Here and Look closely at the tool being used to cut the bolt face. It's HSS / Rex95 and I ground it for this purpose. Hope this helps.

Re: Couple questions about bolt truing/chambering

i use this solid carbide boring bar. it is too long if you are only using it for truing a bolt face. i keep this long one in a holder and use it for everything including muzzle crowns and opening up muzzle brake exit holes.

edit: the link didn't work. the msc part number is 05253224 for the one i use. you can get them in any size though.

Re: Couple questions about bolt truing/chambering

Thanks for the info. I am using a copy of the GTR jig. I have seen the tool from Brownells but I was not sure if it was the right one. The description says it is used to open the bolt face. Can this tool be modified so it resembles the one wnroscoe has a picture of? Thanks for the part number 300sniper. I have been looking all over to match the tool that you show in one of your pictures to cut the bolt recess. How much do you guys tighten down the bolts in the jigs that you are using?
