So I have been thinking of hunting coyotes.
I see alot of people use alsorts of diffent gear, but I don't want to go spend alot to try something I might not continue doing.
I intend to use my AR15 with a Millet DMS scope on it, otherwise I have no other Gear.
So what do you guys recommend as a base for trying it out?

Re: coyotes in Az

By base do you mean rings? If you are looking for a cheap (price wise) solution that is good quality then burris xtr's, if you have 200$ to spend then id go w/ a larue spr mount.
Pm sent.

Re: coyotes in Az

Felipe, I sorry I guess my post was a bit confusing.
As far as my rifle goes, all I need is a five round magazine which is no trouble finding.
I was actually asking about calls, decoys, blinds and other gear.
Some people spend a large amount of money on everything from camo to scent blocker and I was looking for input as to what basics gear would be a must have to try hunting coyotes out.
I don't want to spend alot of money on this stuff to find out I am not going to continue using it.
Thanks for your reply though, and I sent you a reply to the PM you sent.

Re: coyotes in Az

I have an electronic call with loud speaker and it works great. Its older and uses casette tapes. I have several tapes from pack call to woodpecker to baby pig. Before i had the call I had the tapes and used them in my truck. parked in the edge of the woods or behind something and left the stereo on and windows down. it does well that way too. I dont have a casette player in my truck now but the calls are out on CD. Just a suggestion.

Re: coyotes in Az

You don't need a lot of high dollar gear to call and hunt coyotes. Get a hand call and some camo if you like, and that’s all you will really need.

+1 for the Circe. I have been using one for a while, with good results.

Re: coyotes in Az

I have some Dave Thompson calls which I really like. All you really need is:
1. Gun/ammo
2. Calls

Cammo is nice, but not entirely absolutely needed. More important is keeping absolutely still, and watching your wind direction. Coyote hunting is hard. You will more than likely not even see one your first few (many) times out. Get with someone else who is experienced and you will learn a lot more a lot quicker.

Re: coyotes in Az

I have a state trapper rating and hunt for the cattle and sheep ranchers in my county.I use mouth calls sometimes but rely on the Fox Pro caller with a remote.Great success in conjunction with a moving, spining fox tale.It has settings to dictate how fast and for how long it moves. Its great because the yote is fixed on the remote call and the tail'All you do is wait till you turn their head into a cannoe.

Re: coyotes in Az

on these calls, inparticular the circe call, are you using the new ones I have seen at the shop that are made of plastic or the old wooden ones that I have read about but never seen.

Re: coyotes in Az

additionally, when you try to hunt coyotes how long would you stay in a spot and try to call them in?

Re: coyotes in Az

I would only stay 5-10 minutes on each stand. 15 minutes tops. In a calling rifle, I would stay away from adding too much weight to it. I like light compact and fast handling rifles with smaller cartridges. The .204 Ruger and .223 Rem are probably the best in my opinion. The .22-250, maybe if you are out west in wide open country. However, with the light rounds, it is fun to see your impact. Anything above the .22-250 it gets difficult due to muzzle jump. I know the .22-250 doesn't recoil much but it is enough to take the site picture away from the target.

Re: coyotes in Az

alien, thanks, I would have stayed alot longer. you just saved me a bunch of time.
I was looking at the link under your signature line looks like a good place to learn more, so thanks again.

Re: coyotes in Az

The amount of time I stay @ a stand depends on the type of country I am calling. If you are in wide open country you need to stay longer, if you are in heavy/wooded area, short stands are in order. I am using the new plastic Circe calls(alternating between 2 to let them disperse moisture). Just my .02

Re: coyotes in Az

Like the others said......no need for fancy gear. Sit still and watch the wind. I usually stay for 10 minutes, longer if I think bobcats are in the area. I also like to take a shotgun with me in tight cover especially in Az.

Re: coyotes in Az

I set for 5 or so minutes before i start calling. then start with a low sound and work my way up to the loudest call. and if you see him go back to the lower sound. and if they howl at you they saw you...

Re: coyotes in Az

Are you using slugs for the shotgun on coyotes or some buckshot?
It hadn't occured to me to even think of using my shotgun.

Re: coyotes in Az

down in phoenix area, theres quite a few of us who go out. Some use a electronic calls, some mouth calls(takes a little practice), get some camouflage for your area, we stay on stand no more than 15 minutes.
I use my AR, but some buddies use their shotguns, most use buckshot or T-shot with a dead coyote type of full choke.
you'll learn lots at predatormasters.com too

Re: coyotes in Az

I've been using the 3" Dead Coyote rounds.......the blood you see in the picture is actually the backside of where I shot this dog. The other side was a 5" circle of where the round patterned on the side of the dogs head. Not a pretty sight but I was about 12 yards from the dog and she never saw me. #4 buck is my other choice of round to use.

Re: coyotes in Az

I feel the same, I am going to have to go buy o call and do some experimenting.
I have been told by some that there is a good area just down the street from my house, of course now I have to wait for the roads to get plowed also.

Re: coyotes in Az

That works. My partner uses a scoped AR. I use a Millett LRS on an M1A or a model 70 in 7mm mag when I really want to reach out like the finger of God. Hit em in the chest and the rear legs just come right off

Re: coyotes in Az

Watch some Bucking the Odds videos on You tube. I shoot my leftover goose loads in my shotgun, rolls them till 50 yds..

I tend to sit 15-30, depend on stand. Theres always a few that you never see right away! You have to vary your tactics from calls to stands, to techniques to be a good coyote hunter...
