Looking for some advice on Criterion prefit options. Looking at maybe giving a Criterion Rem/age prefit a try depending on other things pan out. Anyway I’m trying to get away from the heavier than shit m24 contour my 308 currently sports. Was thinking med/light palma ish for a little bit less weight, but still able to sustain under repeated fire. By the looks of their chart I was guessing their Varmit contour is he closest to that. Anyone have any experience with these to give me some guidance either way?

I'm running the heavy varmint on my Tikka. You might look into the light varmint

I have the varmint at 24", when I got it only the contours on this chart were available.

Now it seems they offer more, more being mtu, heavy straight, heavy bull and heavy mtu. All of those new ones are heavier than the varmint in question though. (this was more for looking at it and getting my thought in order)

I went with varmint because I htought it was the best compromise like you are. I was torn between that and the bull thinking that on the bull maybe a bit of that thickness at the end of the barrel would help heat absorption since its thinner at the chamber for the barrel nut. The new Heavy contours look to add that meat back to the chamber area.

Now that I have it I sort of wish I had gone with the bull or one the new heavy contours, basically the inverse of what you are doing. That said I dont have any complaints about the varmint. Its still a hefty barrel. The rem varm is a bit narrower at the end but its thicker at the chamber. Pretty darn close in weight though.

Here is a comparison of my 16" rem varm next to my 24" cbi varmint.

Damn, Ive edited it to save them to the hide servers and take up space
Thanks man! Just the kind of stuff I was looking for. If I go this route I think the varmit contour is more what I’m looking for.

Right now I have 20” 308 M24 contour in a AICS 2.0 legacy chassis. It’s 13 lbs with no scope. Rifle is for sale right now and if it goes I’ll be buying a bew BA with KRG bravo (picked one up for a hunting rifle of mine for better tripod interface and actually really like it. I think adding the adjustable buttpad, maybe spigot, and Arca Rail will be a nice lighterweight package to complement the barrel change as well) if I get too impatient I’ll probably just rip the barrel off and sell the chassis and use my 700 action. I’m weighing my options either way.

I have also have a RPR that’s enough of a tank so I have the heavy guns covered lol

I have a criterion 26 inch 6.5 creedmoor varmint savage prefit with a threaded muzzle. Kitchen scale puts it at 4 pounds, 9.75 ounces. Don't have the rest of the parts for the build so I can't tell you how it shoots or balances.

If your concerned about weight/contour Keystone Accuracy has button barrels that they contour to any profile you want, chamber, thread, etc. They hammer too with multiple local PRS wins using there button blanks. Just another option with lightning fast turn around time.

Have 3 cbi varmint contour barrels and think they are a good comprise between weight and rigidity. All of my criterions have been great shooters too. That said I would only run 16-18" long 308s and for me I can get away with a MTU without it being too unwieldy @16". How long is your current MTU 308?

+1 for Criterion Light Varmint contour.
I will look into the light varmit. I’ll be hanging a can off the end of it so I’m looking to keep some rigidity. It won’t really be a hunting gun so as long as it’s noticeably lighter than what I got I’ll be happy. What are you’re uses/experiences with light varmit?

    It’s a 20” 308. Looking to move to a 22” 6.5CM and still loose a little weight.

I would do a varmint contour then at 22". Your only saving .75- 1 lb or so between the two contours at that length but that's just me. If absolute weight savings is the greater determinant lt varmit would be your ticket.

I’ve had a Varmint wt. 6.5x47 and currently have light varmints in 22-250, 6.5x47 and .308. If they shoot any less accurately than the Varmint, I can’t tell it. The 22-250 will put five into the .2s to .4s with its favorite load, the 6.5x47 will go .4s to .5s and the .308 will go .3s to .4s. Best shooting Barrels I’ve ever shot and that includes some pretty reputable stuff; Hart, Douglas Premiums, Krieger, Brux and Bartlein.
