The World Health Organization is investigating a mysterious illness in South Sudan that has killed dozens of people.
I believe 2012-2014 had been a time when the truest terror had been felt by many globally. The Ebola epidemic of West Africa was a potentially apocalyptic situation. Airborne spread possible at close range, virus viable for long periods of time even outside human host... And a 50-70% mortality rate with gruesome sci-fi horror movie grade symptoms. In a situation like that, if a vaccine had been commercially available, you would have people killing each other in order to get it.
Been thinking about this a lot for the last 18 months or so...
Any virus should be taken seriously of course, but we’re treating this whole thing like Ebola Junior. Response so blown out of proportion as to be laughable if the consequences (loss of liberty, economic destruction, mental health, etc.) weren’t so serious.

I'm more concerned over what "gain of function" or genetically-targeted research is being done on diseases. Imagine a weaponized Ebola optimized for certain genetic traits. WHO would be declaring "it must have come from the fish market" as they bled out.
Heck, another decade or three and AI may hijack automated bio-labs and release a people-ender. Thanks to some researchers with zero ethics or pudgy dictators bent on world domination, anything is possible.
