Just picked up a Rock Creek 5R .22 cal barrel that I am going to use on a Sako Quad action for a trainer. Was thinking that I would go 22". Barrel blank is 0.900 straight Will be threaded for use with a can as well.

Lija does their barrel at 21". Factory Quad barrel is 22".

Am I missing something?

maximum velocity for a 22LR happens at about 11" of barrel. anything over that you are getting more drag than velocity from powder burn. My 24 inch marlin 39 shoots everything subsonic, nice and quiet without a can because it is soooooo long.

Re: Custom Rock .22cal Barrel: How Long?

I'd go the same as the barrel you are duplicating. Yes, the 22lr slows down in the barrel after 'x' inches, but if it's a good pipe that's a good thing. Actually to get good accurate performance from 22lr ammo, you prefer it to be well above the transonic zone, or always under, not on the cusp. There's no BC in that round..

Re: Custom Rock .22cal Barrel: How Long?

Even the Stingers go transsonic by 85yd or so.
Aggisig, are you saying HV is subsonic in your Marlin?
I agree that the trainer should match the primary arm as closely as possible for best use.
Don't worry about any velocity loss. Some very good scores are shot with 28" .22s.
And IIRC, ammo mfgs test in 24" barrels regarding velocity.

I think your numbers are a bit off. There have been a ton of accuracy/velocity test on .22 lenght and from what I remember, 16-18" seemed like the sweet spot for a heavy barrel .22. check out the benchrest.com or rimfirecentral for specifics.

Re: Custom Rock .22cal Barrel: How Long?

Cut it where you want it. Dont worry about the other stuff, it will mean nothing. If it were me Id go 20 or 22.

Do you mean Target speed and sub's by everything? My 513T (27" bbl) shoots fed. bulk ammo 1260fps rated quite well and its not shooting them subsonic. Been itching to try auto match... </div></div>

Thats exactly right, maybe it's a little tight. I still get decent accuracy (target aperture front and rear irons) but the gun shoots subsonic with everything from winchester T22 (what I shoot in my NRA bullseye gun) to CCI MiniMags (squirrel medicine) to federal bulk box (just for fun) the only thing I hear when I drop the hammer is the *ping* of it striking the firing pin.

you also have to remember that the gun has Marlins "microgroove" rifling thats 16 grooves in the barrel as opposed to what 4 or 6?, probably puts more drag on the bullet than a normal rifling pattern would. I've never tried stingers or the lightweight hypervelocity stuff if somebody buys me some I'll try it and let you know.

next time I'm at the range I'll see if one of my buddies with a fancier phone can get a video and I post it so you can hear the ping =]

you my brother (or sister) think exactly the way i do, not only is it cheap to shoot this gun but it is also more fun since I don't need to wear ear protection.

and I have to admit I'm a levergun addict, I only have 6 of them with 2 on the way =]

Re: Custom Rock .22cal Barrel: How Long?

If you are looking for maximum accuracy follow Lilja's lead and go with 21 inches. Dan's all about maximum accuracy.

Re: Custom Rock .22cal Barrel: How Long?

I'll restart this discussion... What is the longest barrel the Quad action could handle? It doesn't seem too stout of a setup for a really long heavy barrel.
