Can I cut and thread a standard Tikka T3X stainless fluted 6.5 Creedmoor Barrel? I will be taking this to a gunsmith but having never used a gun smith before I thought maybe you guys could give me some pointers on things to ask the gunsmith? Maybe an idea of a price of what I am asking for? Or should I even be trying to get this done? I would really like to add a break to a 20" stainless fluted Tikka barrel. Thanks everyone!

I have a T3X lite in 300 wm that I had threaded for a brake. He was able to thread it 1/2-28 and I paid $80 for the threading.

Just be aware that the lite contour is pretty thin and you might not be able to get the thread pattern that you want.

That's part of the reason why a lot of these people are cutting their barrels back to 18" were it's thicker. Since you have a fluted model I'm not sure if that option is viable for you.

So you might have to go the route that the first post did and go a smaller thread pattern despite the caliber choice. (Which still should be fine if you're only installing a brake)

You should tell your gunsmith:
  1. Your rifle's caliber
  2. The diameter of the barrel at the muzzle
You should ask
  1. Can you thread it for a brake (not break)?
  2. What thread size can you machine given the barrel thickness? (this will drive your brake selection)
  3. Do you need to remove the barrel from the action?

It will cost you between $50 and $100
