I'm thinking about purchasing a CZ 75 SP-01 in the near future and wanted to know what you all thought of them or what your experience has been if you have one. i would definitely get a trigger job on it once i got it. thanks for your input.

Re: CZ 75 SP-01

I have the SP-01 shadow and absolutely love it. I would have to say it is my favorite gun to shoot right now. Very soft on the recoil and accurate with the 124 grain bullets.

Re: CZ 75 SP-01

Wrighy, the SP-01 its a great gun ,i have one,but its big and heavy, for carry i will go with the CZ-75B.
Now some custom work can be done by czcustom.com, they have triggers, hammers, springs,etc.....also check the czforum.com
Good luck

Re: CZ 75 SP-01

Thanks for all the input, ya i know the SP-01 is big and heavy, actually thats kinda part of the reason i like it. I'm also not looking for it to be my carry gun. im just a fan of all steel and i like the way it points. its good to hear that many of you like your CZ's.

Iceman, i have been looking real hard at the shadow. it seems like a great firearm. my question is, do you think that it is worth the extra money over a regular SP-01 with a trigger job? i know there are other differences between the two, just wondering what you think, thanks.

prom - nice pics btw, sweet looking handguns! is that a light or laser on your SP-01?

Re: CZ 75 SP-01

biggest problem with the CZ pistols is the fact the hammer hooks have a negative angle so when the trigger is pulled during single action mode the hammer has an amount of backward travel. Even the early CZ pistols are like this. There is a bunch of stuff you can do to the trigger. Great guns though. Story is that Gorbachev's bodyguards carried them, don't know how accurate that is.

Re: CZ 75 SP-01

Parga, i'm glad you brought up the backward hammer travel in single action mode. one of the guys at the range was telling me about this when i told him i was looking into a CZ. how much of a problem is this, and is there any way to fix it?

Re: CZ 75 SP-01

Pulled a SP-01 off the prize table at Benning a few years back. Put another $400.00 in trigger (they use the trigger out of an 85), safety, hammer, fiber optic front sight and different rear sight and a few extra mags. Very fun pistol to shoot, reset on trigger is sweet with a 2lb. single action pull.
Mat Mink has parts and can do a great build, Angus Hobdel also works on them. My local pistol smith did mine and it is as good as any I've seen. Also have an 85, 9mm 75, 40 S&W 75, and 75 compact, along with two 527's in .223 and .221 fireball and my favorite a 452 22lr. Yes I like my CZ's.

Re: CZ 75 SP-01

Wrighty, i think if the backward hammer travel in single action its a problem, you really need a Browning hi-power, check that gun, both are great...i change my customs hi- powers for CZs...good luck.

Re: CZ 75 SP-01

it's not really a problem just a design thing and most people are not used to seeing a negative angle in action. Positive angle is the problem because it is then when you'll end up with hammer follow and failure of the sear to engage during cycling. You can change the geometry of the hammer hooks, shorten them as well as work on the sear. CZ does make a competition hammer that is popular and the hooks are shortened and adjusted.

Re: CZ 75 SP-01

cool thanks. as of yet that was the only real negative i've heard about the CZ (except from some that it is heavy, which i actually like) so i wanted to follow up and check it out.

Prom - i've held the BHP's and they seem like great guns, little smaller than the CZ. how do they stack up against the SP-01? should i be looking at the BHP's instead?

Re: CZ 75 SP-01

For carry and fun i will go with a custom BHP , for home defence and fun the SP-01 its my choice....before i when to the CZs i was a HP guy all the way, the grip of the CZ its so great i have to chance the guns for CZ only and thats it for me.
From the late 80s i use HK P7 ,Berettas,Stars,Glocks, Brownings i always come back to the CZ-75 and this is my personal choice just make more time testing as many guns you will see the grip of the CZ its natural .GL

Re: CZ 75 SP-01

Shadow is a lot of gun for the money if you don't mind the SP01 frame. Pretty much factory gun built to rule USPSA production class, with all the fixins. Check BENOS and all the other race gun areas to find someone cutting a deal on one.

My favorite of all the CZ's still is the '75SA though. I just reallllly dig the ergos on that pistol.

Surprised to hear about all the trigger/hammer woes. Angus makes a comp hammer which is absolutely excellent. That, an 11lb recoil spring, and a 13lb main (15 if you shoot factory stuff with hard primers) and you are right into the thick of things. It's not that the factory trigger sucks (I'd put it on par with anything else), it's just that the disparity from a factory CZ to a worked one is so huge.

You guys gunning factory CZ's don't know what you are missing. My DA/SA guns are have some of the best triggers I've ever felt in that setup. My SAO guns are completely adjustable in pre/over travel, break as low as 1.5lb, and can hang with the best 19/2011 triggers. No joke. Guys buy CZ's FOR the triggers.

Re: CZ 75 SP-01

Here in Europe they pop-up in all the gun-clubs and they are incredibly popular due to their excellent ratio cost/quali.
I shoot a SP01-Shadow, got it second-hand hand & cheap and I simply love it !
I used to shoot a glock17 before but the increased weight of the CZ actually helps me tremendously to re-acquire my nextshoot/target.
