Im in the market for a new small game rimfire and wanted to know which is better. I will either be getting a CZ 455 American in a 17 HMR or the Savage 93R17 BVSS in a 17 HMR. They are very similar in configurations. Both 6 lbs, both have 21 " barrels basically, both are 1:9 twist. As far as i know the CZ should bring me at about 500 and the savage shouldn't bring me any more then 450 at the most and 350 at least. The savage has the accutrigger but i was told has plastic trigger guards and stuff where as the CZ is all metal.

I was told the CZ is a better rifle but accuracy is about the same. Now which rifle is actually better and what would you get. i know there is a decent amound of people who dont like the 17 but i have already decided on caliber. Its just firearm now./ Thank you

I'm also a huge fan of American products that can more than compete with imports.

The Savage plastic parts can be replaced with metal ones if that's something that bothers you. I'd buy another Savage, but then again I've had great results with them. My one Brno experience was much less than stellar.

The Accutrig + savings make it a no-brainer for me.

Re: CZ vs Savage rimfires?

I had a Savage for a little while (.17M2) that shoot good. I sold it and now have a CZ452 Varmint (.22). I personally like the look and feel of the CZ over the Savage.

How did they shoot? i know the 17 is generally a better shooter then a 22 but i mean the guns themselves?

Re: CZ vs Savage rimfires?

I'm sorry but really? I think there have been two other Savahe vs. CZ threads in the last day alone. Does the search button not work anymore? Nope, it definatly still works. Just used it. Here, Savage vz. CZ threads to keep you busy for months...

Edit: I'm sorry that was sort of rude of me. My appologies

Re: CZ vs Savage rimfires?

I have 3 savage rimfires. A 93G 22mag, MKII sporter barrel and a MKII hvy barrel in a wallis forge stock. I can't elaborate much on the CZ rimfires and I am sure they are nice firearms. However accuracy and function have been excellent with all of mine. The 22mag is a little picky with ammo but both of my 22s shoot lights out! After my experience with savage and given that they are a american company I'm not sure I could ever justify the difference in cost. The price of the eggs are not worth the wear and tear on the hen's ass in my opinion.

Re: CZ vs Savage rimfires?

I have a savage and love it. But I have fondled a couple of CZs. The CZ is definitely smoother.

If I could do it over I would swing to the CZ, but I haven't looked into the aftermarket support for them.

Depending on the upgrades you want to do research parts first then decide. Either way you can't lose.

Re: CZ vs Savage rimfires?

First point....search function...learn to use it.
I cannot comment on any of the 17's as I have never had a use for one.
To the made in America camp, weak fellas, very weak. The Savage rimfires are NOT made in the United States they are indeed made in North America so what has been said is "technically" true. They are in fact imported from Canada.

The Savage shot very well. Mine was a MKII syn. stock with the sporter barrel. It was a handy rifle but a little on the light weight side for me. If I'd bought the HB version I would probably still have it.

The CZ shoots great. I had it threaded to use my can and got very light baffle strikes. I sent it to Hooper who said the factory crown wasn't square to the bore. He cut it down to 16 1/4" and re-threaded it. Shoots as good as it did before except it's quiet too...

www.rimfirecentral.com has more information on the CZ's than you can learn in a lifetime, all in one nice little spot. CZ's are so well liked and discussed that the gang at rimfirecentral.com know more about the CZ's than the employees at CZ building the rifles........

Savage is cheaper
CZ has better fit and finish (especially the bolt!!!)
Both capable of shooting great
CZ is probably slightly more accurate out of the box (Savage bottom metal is the limiting factor out of the box)
More stock options for the savage
Slightly better resale value for the CZ (buy a 452 now and the price will actually go up in a year or two)
both good triggers......
both good choices.

I would choose the CZ over savage for the bolt quality alone.
