I live just about 10m from where this happened. That airport is on the edge of Holston Mountain its a murderous bitch to land at and the mountain comes on you very quickly (ask Alan Kulwicki or any of the other dozens of crashes on that mountain). Dale jr's was a hard landing plain and simple they had been out of the plane for a good bit before it ever caught fire, the real danger was that is a pretty busy 4 lane and its amazing that it didnt hit any traffic and kill a motorist. My guess pilots misjudged the runway. Still very lucky that it wasn't worse than what it was.
