I am getting a 308 rifle with a twenty inch barrel built in the LRI Rem 700 accurizing/build GB. I plan to use it for deer and hog hunting and informal target shooting. Having had my vision temporarily wiped out once by shooting a comparably barreled 243 between sunset and last shooting light, I plan to install a flash hider.

I am considering the following two flash hiders at Midway:

DPMS Flash Hider A2 5/8-24 Thread AR-10 LR-308 Steel Parkerized

Daniel Defense Flash Hider 5/8-24 Thread AR-10 LR-308 Steel Matte

I know that there are other good flash hiders out there, but I am only considering these two. I am leaning toward the DPMS because it is shorter than the Daniel Defense. Also, chea..., Ah, more economical by a box or so of shells. I will be using the rifle from a blind or pickup, so length is a consideration, all else equal.

Does anyone have experience with either of these flash hiders in low light conditions?

Thanks in advance.

Here they are . . . Daniel Defense on the left and DPMS on the right.

Both are about two ounces and about 0.85 inch in diameter. The slots on the Daniel Defense are a little longer and wider than the DPMS. The Daniel Defense is 1.88 inches long and the DPMS is 1.75 inches long, which makes the Daniel Defense 1/8 inch longer than the DPMS. The finish on the Daniel Defense is more even than the finish on the DPMS. Both are steel.

I plan to return the Daniel Defense ($59 including crush washer) and keep the DPMS ($22 plus $4 crush washer), so I won't be doing functional tests.

If I weren't on a budget, I'd keep the Daniel Defense because of its better finish and perhaps better function.
