Just bought a used Daniel Defense V1 with less than 50 rounds down the tube. The one surprise I had though is when I looked at the barrel serial it says 'DD 4150 5.56 NATO 1/7' which implies that it is not CHF but button cut. How old is this rifle that the V1 is button swagged.

Also is there any real disadvantages to that. I know DD is a well respected brand that's has nice barrels, I assume their button barrels are high quality as well?

Can't tell you exactly how old, but their button swaged barrels are high-quality.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it at all. I like hammer forged barrels as much as the next guy, but the evidence that they actually last longer or are more accurate that a high quality non-HF barrel is unclear.

Ok great. I have one more question. All the parts show that the rifle barely had any rounds through it (barely any silver showing on the contact points and bolt face is still very fresh.) But the only thing that I noticed that I'm not sure about is when looking down the barrel from the crown, the steel around the crown looks like it is part chromed part not. I'm from the bolt gun world so I have no idea whats normal and what isn't. Heres a picture:

I'd add a slight correction here; buttoned barrels may be of high quality. The manner of manufacture has relatively little bearing on quality, and I've worked with very high quality CHF, buttoned and cut rifled barrels. I've also seen each of these methods used to turn out true crap barrels that I wouldn't waste my time with. All comes down to using good material, and having operators who know what they're doing while they're producing the barrel. DD generally makes some pretty rock solid stuff, so regardless of what method was used to make it, I suspect you're in pretty good shape here.

Not sure if I contributed to the confusion here, but I would definitely agree with Kevin. Not all barrels are created equal. My comments were meant to be limited to Daniel Defense button swaged and hammer forged barrels. I will never understand trying to save a few bucks by buying a cheaper barrel of questionable origin, when you can get BCM for $230 or DD or others for close to that.

Looks like a bit of carbon build up on the crown is all. I just bought a DD barrel and it shoots amazing. At fifty yards I could shoot 12 groups of 5 with my surefire 60rounder and red dot that all went into an inch. This was sustained rate of fire with no breaks or impact shift. Love this barrel and can't wait to tear it up later on.
