I'm strongly considering getting a pair of Danner TFX boots, but am debating between the goretex model or the "hot weather" model. I'm up in the Northeast, so we get the full run of temperatures up here.

I would like to be able to use these in the summer though, so does anyone have a good sense of how much hotter are the goretex model is, and how well (or bad) the non goretex model does in the wet?

Re: Danner TFX with goretex or not?

I've got the non-goretex ones and used them out camping/hunting in the low teens in slushly wet oklahoma winter....with a good pair of wool socks my feet were plenty warm.

I wouldn't want the goretex in the summer at all...with standard socks my feet tend to sweat a little in the TX summer

I have a pair of danner loggers that are goretex and LOVE them. I wore them in the mtns of Oregon and year around here in Alabama. Would not have anything else!

Thanks. How waterproof/resistant were the non-goretex ones? I've only had goretex hiking boots, so I don't really have anything to compare to.

Re: Danner TFX with goretex or not?

I've never had the Danners, but have had Asolo backpacking boots for years.

The non-Goretex versions can be made fairly waterproof for a short time with leather treatments. But remember, the more you seal the boot, the less breathable it becomes. They MUST be maintained to stay waterproof.

My last pair of Asolo's were Goretex, only because they did not have my size in the non-Goretex. I NEVER get Goretex, if I don't NEED it because my feet sweat so bad in them.

These NEVER leak. My feet have NEVER gotten wet. I wear them every day now. I hike in them, hunt in them, I've stood in swampy water for over an hour in them. I've switched to nothing but high quality merino wool trekking socks and I don't seem to notice the sweat so much. I'd buy them again, because there's not much downside (other than cost)and if I forget to treat them, they still keep me dry unlike my other backpacking boots.

As said above, your feet will sweat more in goretex.

Your best bet is to match the boot to the terrain and climate.

I use goretex in cold/wet weather.

Currently I wear a set of Danner Ft. Lewis in the winter. They are not fun in the summer. Even my non-insulated Belleville ICB's suck in the summer.

Re: Danner TFX with goretex or not?

I use the TFX Gore Tex lined in our 100+ degree days here in Texas. Work beautifully. The Goretex doesn't keep in the heat, but out the water mostly. I love 'em.

I wear danner acadia noninsulate gortex all summer in Texas and have no prob with feet sweating. They are the best. I have danner canadians for the winter.
