AUGUST 23--The Department of Justice is seeking to hire linguists fluent in Ebonics to help monitor, translate, and transcribe the secretly recorded conversations of subjects of narcotics investigations, according to federal records.

A maximum of nine Ebonics experts will work with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Atlanta field division, where the linguists, after obtaining a “DEA Sensitive” security clearance, will help investigators decipher the results of “telephonic monitoring of court ordered nonconsensual intercepts, consensual listening devices, and other media”

The DEA’s need for full-time linguists specializing in Ebonics is detailed in bid documents related to the agency’s mid-May issuance of a request for proposal (RFP) covering the provision of as many as 2100 linguists for the drug agency’s various field offices. Answers to the proposal were due from contractors on July 29.

Re: DEA Seeking Ebonics Translators

I'd love to see the entrance exam for that position.

Re: DEA Seeking Ebonics Translators

It's not likely they will be satisfied with what they get. Ebonics in Atlanta is different from ebonics in Chicago, particularly with those in the drug trade. Terms and phrases used here would likely not be understood by a drug dealer in LA.

9 major city focuses perhaps then?

Originally Posted By: Phylodog

It's not likely they will be satisfied with what they get. Re: DEA Seeking Ebonics Translators

I knew there was a reason they talked like that........
like the code-talkers in WWII....

Re: DEA Seeking Ebonics Translators

They use to have one on the payroll but he shot himself in the foot.

Re: DEA Seeking Ebonics Translators

I wonder if I score 50% on the exam if I can force them to give to me the job b/c I am white, and not giving it to me would be discrimination?

Conceptually I should be able to lie about having a Masters in Ebonics from East St. Louis University as it is a matter of my first amendment rights...

Good luck

Re: DEA Seeking Ebonics Translators

It won't work. They will just come up with new slang so that they stay one step ahead. Making up new slang is easy, cheap, and simple. Paying someone to decode slang is expensive. The ideal slang translator would probably be 16 years old.

Re: DEA Seeking Ebonics Translators

It's sad that a slang was legitimized by naming it Ebonics

Not that it sounds that manly, but I'm a linguist by training, among other things, and Ebonics is not a slang, no matter how much that may displease you. Instead, it is a dialect of English, just as much as the English that the rich, irritating guy on Gilligan's Island, (Thurston Howell III) spoke is another dialect of English, his humorously referred to as "Larchmont Lockjaw."

On that note what is a "Jig" In my last job (engineering firm) a bunch of guys would refer to people as "Jigs" but I've never heard that before and never took part in their conversations so I don't know the context...?? same as A "Jib" I assume ?????

Re: DEA Seeking Ebonics Translators

The Knowledge Skills and Abilities test, mandatory for all federal government positions, does not specify knowledge of grammar other than English grammar. I am concerned that this may result in a group of poorly qualified applicants. For example, "I sleep" is not the present tense, it is the past tense. "I be sleep" is not the present tense, either, it is the future conditional. Errors of this kind would be unacceptable in the analysis of a transcript.

I think the sentence segments above sort of says it all.

What was the stat out not too long ago; something like 35% of fed employees had fake college degrees.

Re: DEA Seeking Ebonics Translators

(CBS) They are safety engineers at nuclear power plants and biological weapons experts. They work at NATO headquarters, at the Pentagon and at nearly every other federal agency. And, as CBS News Correspondent Vince Gonzales reports, they're employees with degrees from phony schools.

Re: DEA Seeking Ebonics Translators

If you can backtranslate:
Motherfucker, I was sleeping on duty when the 1st Sergeant caught me, but I told him he was not paying attention that I was just looking at the inside of my eyes trying to figure out why they were sore

Anyone?
