Looking to purchase my first tripod, and would appreciate opinions - 1) is the series 3 worth the upgrade cost over the series 2 (PRS use only, no backpacking/hunting use); and 2) “L” or standard... I’m 6’, the standard should be fine for rifle standing, but with an inverted M4 spotting scope - I’m leaning towards option for height. Thoughts?

I went with the 4-series when they first came out. Big beefy overkill tripod. Believe me though - it's astoundingly stable as a weapon rest and spotting scope platform. Trade-off of course, the weight.

I also went with the -34 as it collapses to a more minimum height.

I am astounded how stable it is with my 20 lb AT on it. I labored over the decision of purchasing an RRS for a while. It is a lot of money and I am a lot of cheap....very glad I did....no regrets at all.

It confirmed my long standing belief that I am not rich enough to buy cheap equipment

When the RRS tripod and Anvil head were first introduced a friend told me about them and the cost. I laughed. My Manfrotto and Hog Saddle were fine. And I guess they were.

Then, Wigwamitus and I spend some time together looking at other gun related items. He had a RRS/Anvil 34. I ordered one the next week and really like it. I would sell a rifle to own one if needed. Mine is the taller one that gets more compact. Not sure which model otherwise. How do you tell the difference?
