It will just take too long to build the whisper that I really want so I am considering another avenue from now. I am looking for ideas on a good candidate. Prefer bolt action, .400 cal and up, clip fed, selections of heavy barrels out there or maybe one with, will have suppressor, subsonic only, box ammo cheap, tactical stock, pod, etc, range to 300yds but mostly 100-200yd.

I currently own a 44 mag carbine which would make a decent donor other than it is semi, taper barrel, tube fed. May just cost too much to tune that one up to what I want and I guess they are desirable so probably just sell and build what I really need.

EDIT: in trying not to be bull headed here, I might have to reconsider the AR-15 with .50 conversion. Just seems to make sense for this build.

Sure looking like the Ruger 77/44 is the host I really need. Need to find a good stock and resources for a .50AE barrel for it though. I think the .50AE is a great platform for this project. Just no sense in reinventing the wheel.

Re: Decision on a new big bore whisper rifle.

OK, rethinking a bit, the 77/44 with .50AE will limit me in bullet weight/size. Looks like anything much over 400gr will start getting tricky.

I am starting to look closer at the .500 S&W. Just built better for this application..

Another option/thought I have is I have a Rem 700 chambered in .222 that is next to worthless to me in that round. I am a machinist and own a shop so little mods are no biggy to me. I am, however, not familiar with the 700 and not sure if just the bolt and mag differ for all the chamberings offered in this action? IE, it sure looks like some small mods and a new barrel will get me into whatever I want with no real length constraints?

I would want to mag feed but looks like there are several conversions for these in which I would need mag changes anyway for the .500
