Hey guys this is going to be my first bolt action rifle purchase. This is to be a portable multipurpose rifle;
500 yard Target shooting every weekend
Hunting once in a while
1000yard target once a month.
And considering entering competitions in the future.
by the way I dont really care about bench rest shooting. I like the dirt.

I was dead set on the tikka because I have used my buddy's 20in tikka at 1000 before and was successful. I just think this is a great rifle, it is just smooth. But after spending much time going through the forum the Rem milspec 5R caught my attention. There is not much difference in the twist. 1:11 vs 1:11.25.
And there is a 4in barrel difference between the two. But can you guys shed some light on the pros and cons of the two. And how valuable would those extra 4inches be. I would really appreciate your recommendations.

In my opinion, the extra 4 inches doesn't do a whole lot in the .308 caliber. A 20" will still get you out to 1K yards. If you want to shoot beyond that distance, you should really be considering a different caliber.

I have a 20" Tikka Tactical that I have been very impressed with. If it came with a nice HS Precision stock like the 700P and 5R Milspec have it would be near perfect from the factory. Though the factory stock does not seem to hinder its accuracy.

If I was buying again, I would buy the Tikka T3 CTR Scout. Essentially it is the same gun as the Tactical (sans barrel threading and parkerized finish) for $600 less. I would use the $600 that I saved to go towards a KRG Whiskey 3 Chassis.

If I were you, I would look into a rem 700 aac-sd. The stock sucks but from the price diff that can be changed to something you prefer. The muzzel will already be threaded so if you ever plan installing a break it's less money out of pocket. If you reload or shoot factory ammo you will have no problems getting to 1000 yards. There is a ton of reviews on the aac-sd & for what you want its worth checking out... Just my 2¢

Sportsmans warehouse had them a few weeks ago for that price.

Tikka is superior in many ways. The only thing a 700 has over the tikka is aftermarket support. But there the support is growing for the tikka!

- great factory trigger
-great barrels
-better action
-can easily ru any COAL by purchasing long action magazine
- say what you will about the cheap feeling stock, bottom line it is very light and does not seem to hurt accuracy a at all.

I say buy the Remington as you will want to upgrade this and that and there is no better way to do that then with the Remmy. Not a dis on the Tikka, but tried and true is the remmy. And a 5R in 308 will give you sub MOA with 175 grain pills which will get you to 1K no problemo.

i bought a remmy 5r and would do it again if i had the money, but seriously i own a tikka t3 lite in .270 and its very accurate, when it wants to be, and very picky about the ammo i feed it. if i had it to do over again i would have just bought the remmy and saved money for a better scope. just my opinion though

I considered both, ultimately chose the 5R.

I could not find enough info on the tikka, questions on the rigidness of the stock and the plastic bolt shroud was a real turn off.

There are many, many threads about the 5R, the vast majority very positive, it comes in a proven stock and more upgrades are available.

Mine shoots very, very well.
