Decisions, decisions, decisions

Ok so I have this nice FN SPR action I picked up, and I was all set on a .243 win. Now I have been reading all the posts and internet literature on .260, .243, 6.5x47, 6.5 creedmoor, ugh. I can't decide now, decisions, decisions, decisions.

Since i am pretty invested in .308, I am thinking I may just send it to Roscoe and have it barreled with a 18" 1/10 Kreiger. Then once I get it back, I'll send my Remy in to rebarrel and true for the undetermined said 6.5 caliber.

Cheese, now I know what my wife goes through with purses

Re: Decisions, decisions, decisions

I am using my .270 for hunting. I really want to build the 18" .308. My thoughts are that since I am spooled up for .308, that once I get the FN in my hands, I can just continue on without interruption of a rifle, and send in my Remmy for the 6.5 build. Seems good in theory, I can spread the cost out a bit.

I am leaning toward 6.5x47, though I am admittedly fruit for a .243 pushing DTACS. Barrel life is kinda limited though on the .243, but barrels are perishable anyway. Lapua makes 6.5x47 brass, Remmington makes .260, necking up or down the components are that musch of an issue, ballistics are very similar. I keep chasing my tail, see what I mean.

Re: Decisions, decisions, decisions

rock the 260, decent brass, good ballistics, easy to find components. 6.5 Creedmore hard to find brass, 6.5x47 is a little smaller case capacity and small primer pocket. The 243 is great but you are correct, you will torch a barrel decently quick pushin the DTACs around 3K fps. But everything is a trade off in this game.

Re: Decisions, decisions, decisions

build a 6x47lapua and run dtacs with good barrel life. i have had 5 of these and shot 1000s of dtacs. you will be able to run 115dtacs around 3050fps out of a 28in barrel.

Re: Decisions, decisions, decisions

I went round and round on that 6.5 ride for a while and almost went 6.5x47L. With RP Hulls, my 260 pushes 130's at 2,940fps and the 139's are at 2,920fps. I almost pulled the trigger on the 6.5x47L but glad I went 260. Brass is cheaper and if in a pinch can be made with 7/08 or 243 brass fairly easy. 26.25moa to 1k and on the heals of the 6.5x284, I say it's a win/win besides, the rifle is just a fire control device for the bullet. Once it leaves the muzzle it dont care whats behind it.

The 6.5x47L is a great round though............back to square one

Re: Decisions, decisions, decisions

I really don't think that there is a wrong answer to this question as each has their benfits and drawbacks.

That being said, after beating myself up on this same question for a while, I went .260.

Just my 2 cents...this sounds like a plan. I did something very similar for this on a duty rifle and now it is the only rifle I pick up to shoot for whatever I plan on doing. However, I have another action laying around that I am thinking about a .260 as well

Great....now my mind is spinning now!

Re: Decisions, decisions, decisions

I went with the .260 a long time ago, and I'm not disappointed. I don't even own any .308's anymore.

I was looking at the Hornady 140 A-Maxes I was loading up yesterday, and was simply astounded at the sleek length of that bullet. It's a true cruise missile; makes a 175SMK look like Fat Albert.
