Hello guys, buying my first LR rig in .308, just not sure which way to go. the price is up there that a custom is not too far off with a little more saving. so far this is what i am looking at
Rem 700 XCR Compact Tactical for around 1200.00
Rem 700 5R milspec for around 1100.00
Rem 700 LTR for around 1000.00
Rem 700 PSS for around 900.00

I am not opposed to a savage FCP HS precision but I just don't know.

I don't plan on changing the stock right away, if at all. What I want is the best that my measly 1300.00 can buy.
Or should I just keep saving start buying pieces and parts then have a reputable gunsmith build it. Problem with that is something always comes up to take my FUN money away. right now it is my wife's car needs new tires. so i have to hurry up and buy. LOL any information on these rifles would be nice

Thanks.

Re: Decisions Decisions

If I was in your shoes, (which I'm not) I would save and purchase a FN SPR A3. It sounds like you might want to purchase the tires first and then save. If you buy a Remington, you'll probably want to change and upgrade the whole rifle. By this time you might as well of spent the money on the better rifle. This is a "subjective matter" and will bring many opinions. This is just my opinion and has worked for me.

Re: Decisions Decisions

I always hear that those ltr's shoot good out of the box. Nothing wrong with the savages either, plus if you come across a little more play money later you could put a custom barrel on yourself.

what kind of price are we talking about on a FN SPR A3?

OneChance all my other rifles are 700's so I am wanting to possible keep the same platform. I did not get finish my original post in that I am not opposed to other manufactures but my first choice would be a REM 700. I have no experience with Savages and FN's other then what i have read.

well any of these rifles will out shoot me. don't shoot enough right now. I have a Leupold VXIII 3.5x10x40 that I will put on it till I save for better glass. I just want a good platform to start with and shoot it then when the time comes that I can build on.

Re: Decisions Decisions

I have seen FN SPR's that were shopped out cheap, because of bad barrels, making their way into the market...so, buyer beware. Look for an older 700 P. Mine was made in 1992; bought both used and recently Ceracoated, off the Hide a half year ago...shoots inch groups at 382 yards. (Supposed to be 400 but the FU's that laid it out miscalculated!) You don't always have to buy NEW. I have a M40A3 clone (not quite...barrel is 24", single shot adapter, stainless action...but the same weight barrel..) that is a true 1/4 MOA rifle. As the previous owner said, "It is a heavy PIG". True. But what fun hitting the 1 1/2 inch hanging targets at !382! yards. JMHO

Re: Decisions Decisions

Hey, for $1300 you could get into a nice rifle. I'm just not wild about spending over $1K to wind up with a rifle that has any sort of "stock" barrel on it.

A fellow sniper's hider pointed out to me that Brownell's has 700 actions on sale for under $400. Heck, $400 for the action, $600 for a Krieger or other nice barrel put on the action, $200 for a pull of HS Precision stock, and get a cheap bottom metal to get you by for now.

Another route might be to just get an SPS Tactical to shoot now and build it up as you go. I took this route.

Re: Decisions Decisions

700 PSS

Good stock that solid. Longer barrel than the LTR which removes any doubt that 6" less barrel will give you a loss of velocity.

Honestly LR shooting involves long rifles... you can go shorter BUT you will lose a little bit of speed. Work out if this matters to you and decide from that.

They shoot very well, especially with hand loads. I have gotten 1" groups at 400 yards with mine but thats when i do my part.. this equates to 0.25MOA. Not bad for a factory rifle.

Keep in mind that a custom has a waiting period and other associated hassles.

If you need to spend the funds now, I would suggest the Remington 700P as a good choice.

Re: Decisions Decisions

Stevens 200 action - 235.00
Custom barrel - 240 (Mcgowen CM) - 315 Lothar prefit
B&C stock - 220
Trigger (rifle basix or SSS) 100

795.00 total and will outshoot all the rifles you have listed above.

Just my 0.02. My total on my rig with glass is around 1200.00 and easily holds 1.5-2" groups at 300yards.

Good luck,
Merritt

Re: Decisions Decisions

I was kicking around the same ideas, i am on a budget, but I wanted a platform that would not need to be upgraded. I wanted a Rem, but I did consider other makes.

I looked seriously at the new Winchester Stealth, it is the same action as the FN, but with a 26" 1-10 twist barrel in an HS Precision stock. It goes for about 750 off of Buds, but I like a palm swell and that stock didn't have one. I could not find any reviews by anyone that had shot the new rifle and no one on the hide would fess up to owning one, so I passed.

I also considered the 700P, at one time the rifle was made seperately from the regular production rifles, I had a chance to buy one of those back in 93 or 94 and I passed on it. Been kicking myself in the ass pretty regular. Anyway, I digress. I researched it, what convinced me NOT to buy it is that it is nothimg more than a Rem SPS varmint that has been parkerized and put in an HS precision stock. They do, however, have a reputation for shooting pretty well.

I also considered an SPS tactical and a B&C stock but once you put those together, you are talking about 800 bucks, damn near the price for a 700P.

I SERIOUSLY considered the Kimber 8400 tactical, a custom action in a sweet McMillan stock. I wanted a heavier profile barrel, though there is absolutely nothing wrong with the one on it (about a medium contour) and I had seen reports that sometimes the factory bedding job was poorly done, although reports are tht if the bedding job is good, or the bad one redone, they are absolute tackdrivers. Buds sells them for about 1500, a very good price for what is essentially a semi-custom rifle.

I finally decided to go with the 5R, it should be here today, Buds Gun Shop has them for 991, shipping is included in the price.

There is always this option:

Just be aware that the stock pictured is not the one included in the base price.
