In lieu of the coming election I went out yesterday and bought 2 lowers. One is absolutely getting a stamp for an SBR but I'm wondering what to do with the other. I have another AR I have already set up for precision shooting so I don't need that. I'm wondering if you guys would get a dedicated .22LR upper or get a 5.56 upper and .22LR conversion kit. If I got the 5.56 it would be a lefty Stag upper with their .22LR conversion kit. An ideas?

Re: Dedicated .22LR AR or 5.56 upper with conversion

I was never happy with the accuracy of the drop in 22 conversions, I tried a friend dedicated tactical solution 22 upper and made him sell it to me, it is soooo much fun to shoot clay bird chips off the back stop at 100 yds with it, my 10 year old daughter has appropriated it now.
hope this helps.

I've enjoyed my conversion kit for my AR makes packing multiple weapons to the woods much easier. I agree the accuracy isn't on par with the dedicated, but I haven't had any issues hitting rabbits and squirrels at 25-50y. And that's all I use my .22lr for.

It does help, thank you. I don't know how much accuracy I'll be looking for as I'll just be using it to plink around but I agree that more moving parts means more things to break.

I've been pleased with my S&W M&P .22 rifle. Light weight since its mostly polymer. The mags work well. And usually $18 each.

Same controls as any other AR based platform. I replaced the stock with a Magpul CTR I had. It was a mil-spec stock and it fit perfectly onto the buffer tube.

I had a conversion (can't remember the name) which I could never make run reliably with my Bushmaster. Tired all kinds of ammo and it would shoot 2 or 3 times then jam. Nice people in Birmingham tried everything we could think of, even swapping it out for another, They took it back and refunded my money, even the shipping. I'm going with a dedicated upper next time.

I went through the same thing. I purchased a drop in unit, and once I found the ammo it liked it ran ok, I would have a jam every 2-3 mags. Sometimes more sometimes less, never really complained it was just bought to be a fun little plinker. As far as accuracy goes it was ok, I could chase a water bottle around at the 50yd berm with no problems. Never tried grouping it because I just plinked with it using a reflex sight.

Then I bit the bullet and ordered a Nordic Components dedicated upper, and after finding the ammo it liked have had no functional issues with it and I have about 4000 rds through it to date. It simply runs like a top. Clean it up occasionally and keep it oiled and it just keeps running. Using the same reflex sight I can take out clays on the 100yd berm with regularity.

Needless to say my suggestion is save the 100.00 or so bucks and get a dedicated upper, and a bunch of Black Dog mags and have some fun.

Dedicated upper, or Smith and Wesson M&P15-22. Conversions blow, in my limited experience. Whatever you spend on one would be better spend toward a new upper or Smith.

I prefer a dedicated upper; mine is a cmmg short barrel. It runs great on my sbr; as well as on my m16. The full auto cycles great with the standard and high velocity; with antibounce wt removed subs cycle fine. Accuracy is on par with tricked out 10/22

Bought a used Tac Solutions upper, and experienced numerous cycling, and firing out of battery issues. Returned it to Tac Solutions who put in a new barrel and tuned it up, gratis. Subsequently used the upper to qualify as an Appleseed rifleman. It is running suberbly with Federal Match Target ammo.
