Deep or Short??

Looking to rebarrel my 7mm Rem Mag with a custom barrel. I was asked how I want it chambered Deep, or Short. Not sure how to answer. Some schooling would help.

I reload and understand how the difference in jump affects the accuracy of the round. But, I used different bullets and not sure how much or how little jump would be best. I'd hate to have the chamber reamed a second time do to a brain fart on my part.

I do know that I don't want the standard 3/8 inch Remington Lawer throat.

Suggestions???

Pick a bullet (good one) and have it chambered to fit that bullet.

What that means is either getting a reamer built to match your dummy round or using a no-throat reamer and throat after the chamber is done and for that cartridge

Piggyback question:

Should I have my 7mm SAUM chamber cut for the 180 VLD or the new 195 Hybrids? Can I cut it for the 180's and just seat the 195's a little deeper in the case? Or would it be better to cut for the longer bullet and seat the 180's a bit further out?

I don't anticipate being concerned with any other bullets.

If you handload, the shorter would be my choice.

You should be able to seat bullets to be in a proper relationship with any throat that isn't too long. The shorter throat should provide a longer throat life by starting with more material to accomodate erosion. Shorter throats could cause longer loads to jam in the rifling, and could produce pressure spikes, so pay attention to OAL on rounds you're not handloading yourself.

Greg </div></div>Thanks for the advice. I will be handloading for the rifle, so I'll have it chambered for the 180 VLD and seat the 195's a little deeper (maybe even hold off on the 195's until the throat erodes a bit.)
