Re: is my cheap scope screwing me?

I bought a $300 Millett TRS-1 on my first long range gun.

For a $300 scope I was impressed with the build quality and the features.

Now I have 2 Nightforce scopes at home and I can tell you having high quality glass is more than just a luxury. This isn't to say Nightforce even makes the best optics available, it's just that the level of quality and usability is so much higher.

The feel of the adjustments, and the knowledge that you can count on it are huge. The fact that you can count on it to make repeatable consistent adjustments every time- can you imagine how badly the lack of that could screw you over?

The quality and clarity of the glass at distance are truly critical as well. The ability to see the target and point of impact. The eye relief. With my Millet you have to be uncomfortably close to the eye piece, setting you up for flinches (or at worst a nasty cut). The eye relief on the NF is so much more forgiving.

I have a friend with an older Leupold Gold Ring, 3-9x40....the repeatability of the adjustments has completely gone away, really disturbing. We were trying to zero it in a Lead Sled and it was just a disaster. He hasn't tried to get in touch with them to fix it, probably should.

Re: is my cheap scope screwing me?

Try the Hawke Optic Sidewinder 30 series or the newer Sidewinder Tactical series. Tough as nails and a no BS life time warranty. If it fails they replace it, they are second focal plane optic. They will pass the box test with no problem and they do not cost an arm and a leg to acquire.

Re: is my cheap scope screwing me?

+1 for OP for not going out and blowing money he may have sitting around when it may not be the best time (for instance, in season or not in season). Take care of your needs first, and if you aren't relying on your rifle for food, it can wait until the situation is a little better.

Re: is my cheap scope screwing me?

This allowance thing is the funniest thing I ever heard. I share my money with my family. I let them buy things they want and need, but I still get to buy the stuff I want as well, maybe not right way all the time but within a few months. What you need to do is tell you wife you need weapons to protect the family, that should be enough. Unless she is investing all your money and getting a height rate of return something is wrong.

Re: is my cheap scope screwing me?

I agree Bafka scope are crap. My brother was in the same $$$ position as you and bought a Konus M30 6-24X44 scope from for $299 from SWFA and it's clear, excellent resolution and tracks well. Has served him well on his Remy SPS 308 since he got it over a year and 1K rounds later.

you made a typical rookie mistake in a forum heavily populated with real and self imagined alpha males.

You should have done as I did. I came in announcing I am a grown ass man and if some skank EVER tried to tell me how I can spend my money she couldnt sit for a week, and I dont mean because I spanked her!

I get my dinner within 15 minutes of getting home and she is under the table polishing my MIGHTY SWORD!

If I decide to buy yet another big boy toy rather than drop serious coin into the kids' college funds or double pay the mortgage so we dont pay double in interest over the principle that woman had better just shut up and keep polishing my sword!

After I said all that I asked if BSA makes a FFP genII 4x16 with illuminated reticle.

The answers were polite and informative.

You have to puff up and prance around like the new gorilla in on the mountain. We have no way of knowing how your homelife actually works, hell I imagine most do infact have 'allowances' so the bills get paid, unexpected expenses like car repairs get taken care of...

But on the interwebz I can bitchslap that ho and do as I please when I please.

Welcome to the Hide. </div></div>

I posted something that was about as inadvised as the OP's original statement and instantaneously had 17 schoolyard bullies practically smacking each other to get more shots into me. Nobody had a word of defense for me. I am starting to hate this place - make one mistake indicating you're a real human living in the world and the pack of Alpha-dogs races to take a shit on your head.
