Watched the video and read the article, didn't see anything about verifying ownership. Just that ID is checked when checking the bag and when retrieving it from an agent. Also appeared that LE at the counter would add a level of security but not necessarily that there would actually be LE at every location. Typically, anytime I've checked a firearm a LEO verified it was unloaded and compliant before having me lock the case.
Ok I misspoke a little. Due to repeating words of news report. They aren't going to do a background check or run the serial number. Checking ID to make sure person that picking it up is the right person. I don"t have issue with it. I only posted to let people know that their gun won't be coming down the carousel.
Knowing damn good and well there's ways around practically everything, I get the whole idea of feeling the need to address the issue due to the event. I have no problem with this on the surface, but it's a band aid, eye candy if you will, and you know it. Fucked up people are gonna do fucked up shit. Period. No other way to put it. As long as I can still bring a firearm without the approval of an act of congress I'm ok with it.

I remember a flight into TX where I'd nearly missed a connecting flight and was positive my rifle wasn't going to make the plane. I stood at the carousel until the very end, and sure enough, no rifle. I was walking over to baggage services and saw it sitting unattended on the oversized carousel. It would've been nice for someone along the process to say "hey, here's where your rifle will be appearing" or something along those lines.
DELTA's policy seems to actually violate TSA guidelines which IIRC say something about NOT marking your bag in any way to identify there's a firearm inside.
Bogeybrown I have thick skin (have to around here) so no ill intent wasn't even a thought in my head.

That's no shit about needing thick skin. Although we tend not to beat up on each other too bad as long as there's a noob every once in a while who skylines himself and draws fire. I think we should've kept Magnus around as our "throw-down idiot".
My question is what happens if it's a super late flight? Will there always be a delta agent or LEO around? What if there isn't?

Sound off on this scenario. I fly with my firearm into a small airport in South Dakota. We land at 11:15pm. I kinda doubt there would be a delta rep there or a LEO....
Honestly, that's probably better answered by your specific airport and speaking with a supervisor, perhaps even better if you call them when you're inbound and apprise them of the situation so they can be prepared. In all the dozens and dozens of airports I've flown through, continuity of service is not a trait they ever share.

This was perhaps policy in places where easily done, but still PR for hoplophobes. I can't imagine landing at Avoca up the road at 3 AM and them finding an easy way not to inconvenience the shit out of all parties concerned.

I flew Delta out of Ft Lauderdale with a rifle, loaded ammo, new brass and new bullets last Friday 4/1. It really wasn't much different than any previous flights with guns and ammo. Declared I had them at the check in counter, they checked my drivers license, I signed the orange tag and put it in the gun case. They sent me over to ATF who looked over the outside of the gun case, never opened it or looked at the rifle, then they put my lock on it. Then ATF had the ticket agent come over and put the bagage tag on it and I never saw it again until I landed in Detroit. I had to pick it up at the oversize baggage counter. The guy in front of me asked for his golf clubs and only had to give his name, I was asked for the matching baggage ticket stub when I asked for the gun case, but not my ID. My checked luggage did have a tag inside saying that they had inspected it and my ammo brass and bullets had been unwrapped and moved around. The brass and bullets were new, in original boxes and weren't opened. They did zip tie the gun case, but it was a rifle contour shaped case that the stock end pulls off, not the typical fold open pelican type case, so the bag tie did absolutely nothing but they followed the rule I guess??
Never flew with brass and unloaded bullets before so a week before flying I sent Delta an email question about it so they didn't confiscate them- they responded with a standard archery answer, so I replied my question had nothing to do with archery and could they answer my question, they responded to ask the Delta agent when I got there - coudn't understand English I guess.
Just wanted to let everyone know it wasn't too bad. But like Redmann said though - every airport will be different, and I thought Ft Lauderdale would be the toughest after that shooting. Got a lot of funny looks with that case in the shuttle bus and walking around etc. but WTF.
