I just got a Thumbler and ss media and want to deprime before cleaning to clean primer pockets. Do I just drop the deprimer pin down to knock out the primer before the die engages the brass, or is there something special to do, or (heaven forbid) something else to buy. Thanks...

Re: deprime w/o sizing?

yep, the die is like a $10 item and it works great. the decap pin is advertised as unbreakable, but I guess I am a frickin gorilla or something as I have broken several. What I do is go ahead and buy a half dozen pins at a time and keep them on hand and when I get down to one spare, I get another half dozen or so. keep in mind that I am not your avg reloader as I not only reload my ammo but also thousands of rounds of jr team 223 every year and the breakage I get is usually on the dillon running cases thru as fast as I or one of the kids can pull the handle. under normal use, like depriming my 6xc before going into the SS media, I might have broken one over the years.

YMMV

Re: deprime w/o sizing?

Another +1 for the universal Lee Decapping die. The guys on the forum here turned me on to these and I've since purchased an additional 2 to fill the empty die spot on my Dillon 550 toolheads (if I have one) as an insurance die to make sure media is out of the pockets prior to seating the primer. They're too cheap and useful to not have one laying around.

Re: deprime w/o sizing?

I have used 2 different brands of decapping dies . I always deprime brass and rough tumble before resizing . The brass gets cleaner with primer removed . I also ream primer pockets because I have never been able to get rid of all the fouling in the primer pockets no matter how long I tumble them . As the other boys have said you will need to make sure that there isn't any tumbling media in the flashholes or you can bend or brake your decapping pin . Even though punching the primer won't totally clean the primer pockets , it will cut down tumbling time .

I pull the bushing out of my die to reptile w/o sizing. The stainless media gets my primer pocket dead nuts clean. Occasional pin jammed sideways in the pocket.

SS media will solve this problem totally.

Re: deprime w/o sizing?

I have the Lee and the RCBS decapping die.

The RCBS breaks pins.
The Lee does not break.

I am a big fan of the Lee decapping die.

But when I get really serious I put a Lee de capping rod [bought from Lee as a $3 spare part for a Lee loader] into a bullet puller collet die.
This really holds the decapping rod in the center.

Some brass has tiny little flash holes. I buy extra rods and turn them down on the lathe.

I measure the flash holes with a pin gauge set.
I put the rod in the lathe and spin it fast.
I pinch the tip with emery cloth until the tip measures small enough.

Get enough to make the shipping cheaper. They have a special handling charge for orders under...is it $25.
