i have a bunch of once fired brass that i bought that i will be putting through my stainless tumbler. the brass is kind of dirty and some of it has crimped primers so i was wanting to know if i can use my resizing die with the decapping pin run way down so that i can punch out the primers without gunking up my dies before i clean the brass. i'll get a dedicated decappping die soon but i'd like to play with my new toy (the tumbler) this weekend if possible.

Re: depriming

In theory it will work but you might bend a rod or break a couple pins and fuck up your die. You wont get it down far enough that it won't touch the walls of your die. Can't you run them through the SS media twice? once to clean the outside so you can properly size them and then once to clean primer pockets and finish cleaning? seems like a lot of work to me but it could work.

Re: depriming

i'm all about doing that if it won't cause any problems. the instructions said to decap prior to running them but if that's only because of cleaning flash hole/primer pocket i'll just do that

Re: depriming

I would just run them with the primers. Decap and size after and then run them again to get the lube off AND clean the primer pockets.

I have occasionally missed a primer when going thru the decamping process prior to running thru SS media. No harm done.

Re: depriming

Might be worth getting a decapping die sooner than later or just holding off until you get one especially if you have some brass with crimped primer pockets. My sizing die was having issues every several casings. The Lee one I picked up was fairly cheap and robust enough that took out a lot of the headache.

As for your original question with the Hornady F/L dies I have I've been able to do what you were first asking with no issues. Just have to get the decapper pretty far down.

Re: depriming

I like using a dedicated depriming die; I've broken enough pins and subsequently been 'off-line' that the $25.00 investment has paid for itself several times over.

Just an FYI: The pins I've busted were RCBS. I gave their customer service number a call and in a couple of days I had replacement pins in my mail box. No charge....

Re: depriming

For the cost of a LEE Universal Depriming die, why not invest?

Very useful, especially if you use SS pins. Also not a bad way to weed out loose primer pockets if you don't just slam them out. The loose ones will be more obvious.
