did a little testing with a 308 win. and 208 amax

I went to the range today after reading some articles on here and having a ton of extra 208 a-maxs in 30 cal and thought i woudl give them a try with Lapua brass and Win brass also. Which was what was said to be the best with this appliation since its got more powder capacity. anyways here are the results from a 10 shot strain with the WIN brass at 100 yds. Note the one flyer was the 1st shot and I held on the rest and closed my eyes since it was 107% load and a little compressed on quickload all the others were touching as you see and it was sub moa with the 1st 4 shots i just fgured id shoot all 10 and see what it did EDITED: ALSO FORGOT to mention the oal was 3.00" and single loaded each shot and the powder was rl-17 running around 2600 from a 24 in 1x10 twist 5r bbl. ENDED up reading .725" 10 shot group with one 11th flyer. Awesome round with no pressure signs what so ever!

Re: did a little testing with a 308 win. and 208 amax

i've been testing the 208's a little bit lately too.

i started with FC brass and was only able to get to about 48gr of RL17 before i started to get ejector marks and a stiff bolt. some guys on here suggested switching to WIN brass so i went and picked up 100 and started my ladder again at 48gr and loaded 5 rounds at each 0.5gr up to 50gr.

i took them out to the range and at 300yds i got my best group at 50gr; 5 shots center-to-center about 2.34". not my best shooting ever, but it's still about 0.78MOA. here's the target:

i need to chrono these to see what kind of velocities i'm getting, but i'm thinking it's somewhere around 2600-2650fps. i also need to find a place to shoot these at a longer range to see how they perform.

I'm interested in developing a similar load. What altitude are you at? What barrel length and twist? Any pressure signs at 50 grains?

From what I've read even the 1-12 twist barrels do fine with them but guys running the tighter twists seem to get a little more speed out of the heavier projectile. Curious what the OP is using.

What powder, RE17?

Re: did a little testing with a 308 win. and 208 amax

sorry, i should've given more details.

altitude was about 700ft MSL (san antonio, tx), temp was 78deg F.

rifle was a savage 10FPL (pre-accutrigger) with factory 24" 1-10" barrel, SSS trigger, choate ultimate varmint stock (gonna get a stockade stock on it soon), EGW 20 MOA base, burris XTR rings, SS 3-9x mil/mil scope.

i didn't have any pressure signs at 50gr and this was my most accurate load from 48grs up. i'm going to shoot it some at 50gr when it gets hotter out to make sure i'm not getting pressure signs and i need to chrony it to see how fast it's going so i can start putting together a range card.
