I ordered a Rem 700 5R milspec rifle from a local ffl dealer because you cant get a M24 as a civilian unless law enforcment. The rifle came in and its a .308 and its a rem 700 so thats good. It also said it was a stainless 24" barrel. 10th anniversary edition along barrel

serial number is S6756071

Is this the right rifle. I ordered a HS precision stopck

PST0011

thanks

Re: Did I get the right rifle???

is the rifle I got a 5R mil spec.. it should say that on box right? it doesnt say mil spec or 5r or anything just stainless and 10th anniversary edition??

Re: Did I get the right rifle???

If you take a picture of the rifle that might help. IIRC the box does say 5R on it. It also has a green spiderweb HS stock on it from the factory. I believe the .308 comes with a 24" barrel on it. The rifling would have five grooves. Not sure, but I don't believe the 5r has been in production for 10 years???

Re: Did I get the right rifle???

Every person I ask here in CA says its illegal to buy as a civilian. But people can very easily put one together for a much cheaper price. There is a small difference in the remingtong SWS and smeone buying a rem 700 or whatever and puting a HS precision stock o it and a leupold optic. Remington does something to the M24 SWS but im not sure what it is. I hear the 5R mil spec is actually the same barrel and action used in the M24 sws.. ....

so idk anymore so many different opinions out there.

Go to the GA precision website, they offer a mil spec clone of the m24, its actually more M24 than the true SWS's lol.

Re: Did I get the right rifle???

They are too much money. When i was in the military the M24's were all different. different ptics, stocks only one thing was he same and its the name.
They had 24 and 26 inch barels and there was a mix of about 10 stock types. Im not sure whats the origional M24. im just going with what I like.........starting with the 5R and then puting a nf 5.5-22-56 on it and calling it good after i change out stocks

Re: Did I get the right rifle???

The 5R might have the same rifling profile, but the barrels are absolutely not the same. The M24 has a straight taper and starts with a diameter of 1.200" at the chamber end, while the 5R has a radius before it's taper (sendero/varmint) contour, and starts with a diameter of 1.250" at the chamber.

Not the same action... The M24 is made with a Long Action even though .308 is generally a Short Action. The 5R is a Short Action.

Re: Did I get the right rifle???

My 5R says long action right on the box? Also, i called remington and went to 4 dealers here and they all say that you cant have the sws in ca?

Remington SWS is for military and law enforcemtn only! just gt off phone with remington!! There has to be a difference in remingtons sws and if I was to start with a 5R and piece together whatever it is remington does to there sws package.

No... I'm afraid not. The 5R in .308 is absolutely a Short Action Remington.
