The Russian had the best chance and logistics. Before them the Turks and Brits thought they could conquer Afghanistan. The Chinese have a different strategy they’ve already used successfully in Tibet: flood the country with ethnic Chinese and dilute the indigenous. Then they mine the precious metals and increase rules against unofficial religions. (Remember the Uyghurs of Western China- also Moslems? The word genocide is in many articles about Chinese control of them. )

The difference between Afghanistan and Tibet is that they consider Tibet to be part of China. You are correct about the road and rail though. Do not be surprised to find a continuous road between China and Iran. Given everything that China is doing with Pakistan’s electric grid it would be reasonable to have it extend from China into there and potentially into Iran from pakistan as well. These are strategic roads that can be used against India as well as other purposes in a conflict involving the US that aren’t hard to figure out.
