die preference?

Re: die preference?

For non bushing FL dies I perfer Forster, they are a breeze to setup, bump the shoulder back .001-.0015(boltguns), measure that using a Headspace Gauge, there expander is adjusted by means of a sight window on the side of the die, simple easy and effective.

Re: die preference?

I used to reload with the std RCBS dies many moons ago. But since I've gotten back into reloading, the Redding S-type bushing dies are absolutely awesome and very easy to set up and use. I have the Bushing FL and the Competiton seating dies for both .308 and .223 and they work really well, especially ebing able to use the bushings to accomodate different makes of brass to get to the same neck tension soluton.

Re: die preference?

have looked into the bushing/neck tension aspect but think that for now i just need a damn good quality FL die. am also using a redding comp seating die w/micro for this rifle. and i do like my forster co-ax press! and 650. and........

Re: die preference?

For myself, I do three types of reloading.
Handgun, rifle plinking, and rifle "business" type.
Handgun for me is medium volume, medium precision. My handguns digest everything I push through them, including cast bullets from wheel weights.
Rifle plinking is high volume, moderate precision. I choose powders for the combination of accurate metering and accuracy results. I won't be winning any long range matches with this stuff, but it's fun, and we burn through a ton of it.
Rifle "business" is the handcrafting each round, scaling each charge individually, seating to the exact same COAL every time, using trimmed and neck turned brass.
Handgun and plinking ammo get RCBS standard type dies.
Business Rifle ONLY gets REDDING dies.
I'm not personally sold on the micrometer seating dies, but then again, I only used one for about 50 rounds.
I felt I got similar results and consistency with the standard die, though the mic was a little easier on my fingers.
YMMV, but make no mistake, I LOVE my Redding dies.

Re: die preference?

All my Forsters were simple to adjust.
I have several of the Forster "benchrest" seaters, and one of the "micrometer" Forster dies.
The only difference I can see is if you are loading several different bullet types in the same caliber the mic. seating die lets you dial back to a predetermined numbered setting for each bullet. If you are only loading a couple of different bullets you could make up some dummy rounds and easily reset your benchrest die when you changed from one to the other.
