Was talking to a guy at work today about the M24 and M24A2 and he is under the impression from watching 'some show about them on the military channel' that the M24A2 is a completely reworked and 'custom' build rifle like the Marines' M40.

My impression is that they changed out the stock to the new HS Precision stock, threaded the barrel (or re-barreled to threaded barrels), added the HS precision bottom metal w/ detachable mag and added a MARS rail. Pretty much just added a few things and done.

Anyone know firsthand what the difference is, or have a site outlining the difference? Had a lunch bet on it.

    Thanks

Here are the specs from Rem:

I understand that. My question though is what's the difference between the M24 and the A2? I looked on Remington's site and all I noticed is the addition of a MARS rail, HS Precision bottom metal and mag, new stock and a different model Leupold.

Besides simply adding these new parts, is anything technically altered?

Nope, they start with the same barreled action, then do the mods you described. Though I want to say it's Badger bottom metal, they have a specific model for M24s that take short action AICS mags.

It may be Badger, thought it could also be HS due to the stock. But either way, if they pretty much take the existing M24 out of its stock and 'bolt on' the new mods and not do anything else to change any specs I think I may win lunch.

The only guys in the Army capable of building a precision rifle are the AMU guys, and as far as I know they only work on their own stuff. Remington supplies the complete M24 system and is contracted for all the work.
