Differences in Rem. 700P and HS Varmint stocks?

Re: Differences in Rem. 700P and HS Varmint stocks?

There are a few differences that i know of; the police stocks have two swivel studs up front, the forend is usually longer, and have a palm swell. The varmint stocks usually taper at the forend as well. I'm not HS expert so maybe someone else can chime in with more information.

No. Not even close.

The Varmint (SPS's) are no-name plastic stocks. Plain old plastic.

The 700P and a few other models are HS Precision stocks. These have an aluminum bedding block surrounded by kevlar aramid fibers. This makes them stiffer and stronger, which makes them more durable and more accurate. Some models now have Bell & Carlson stocks which are very similar to the HS Precision ones.

Yep, I know about the SPS stocks, but my question was about 2 different HS Precision stocks.

Thanks for the replies. I'm shopping around for a new-used stock for a .223 Tactical.

He's referring to the HS stock on 700P vs HS Varmint stock, not SPS plastics stocks.

Re: Differences in Rem. 700P and HS Varmint stocks?

I misunderstood.

Here is a bit of info I dug up a while back:

HS Precision Stock Model Numbers:

PST012- Standard on Rem 700 P Short Action 2.6 lbs, oal: 33.2 inches

PST086- Standard on Rem 700 LTR Short Action 2.1 lbs, oal: 28.5 inches

PSV096- Standard on Rem 700 5R Milspec Short Action 2.5 lbs, oal 31 inches

PSV002- Standard on the Rem 700 VS Short action. 2.5 lbs, oal 31 inches
(Was the standard on the 5R before they switched to the PSV096.)

The PSV002 and 096 are the same weight and overall length. Differences are:
- 096 has palm swell, 002 does not.
- 096 has wider flatter forearm (tactical stye), 002 has slimmer rounder forearm (sporter style)
- 096 has two sling studs on forearm, 002 has one

All stocks have standard length of pull at 13.5 inches. All stocks are made to the same standards with the same materials.

You can see detailed pictures of the LTR and 5R here:
