Different sized flash holes in same lot of brass? Drill them out the same or not?

I use once-fired Lake City brass for my .308. And I've noticed that the flash holes are not consistent at all.. I havent measured them, but there is significant difference between flash hole sizes.. Has anyone ever considered drilling them out to a consistent size?

Yeah, it's not really drilling that you want to do so much as using a flash hole uniformer to remove the burr left in the cartridge after the flash hole is created. I've used this on a bunch of Lake City brass with good results:

Lyman Flash Hole Uniformer | Sinclair Intl

I unscrewed it from the handle and screwed it into my RCBS prep center for automated hole uniforming, and it's worked fine for over 3000 cases so far.

I was thinking this is a different issue than deburring the flash hole.. deburring it wouldnt uniform the actual hole size.. maybe the actual flash hole size doesnt matter? I was just wondering if it would be useful to shrink my SD a little more or not.

The Lyman tool does open the flash hole up like a drill would & deburs the inside of the hole. You adjust how much you want to debur with the adjustable stop that hits the neck, just make sure they are trimmed.

Yep, the one tool does both in one shot. From what I've found, I'm more surprised by the burrs that come out of Lake City brass than the occasional slightly small flash hole. But, the ones with slightly small flash holes usually are the ones with huge burrs inside.

With the Lyman tool, you adjust the cone part to control how much brass the flash hole tool trims, and it deburrs the inside of the case and uniforms the flash hole in one shot. Really worth a try, especially if you have an automated cartridge prep station like the RCBS, Hornady, etc.
