Dillon 650 Improvement

I'm sure most here are familiar with Unique Tek and the bearing kit they offer for the 550. I had contacted them about a bearing for the 650. They said it was cost prohibitive, but some folks had installed a bearing under the shellplate bolt. They did not recommend it because the bolt might strike the frame when the ram was raised and the bearing would be exposed.

Last week I happened across these and ordered one. Installed last night and tested today. My press has about 1/4 inch clearance between the bolt and frame. The bearing kit is about .200" thick. I used Slide Glide grease to lube the bearing. After loading 500 rounds of .45ACP there was noticeably less powder spilled.

IMO the bearing is no more exposed than the version for the 550. Unique Tek said some presses may have less clearance.

IMO, well worth the $13.

I just ordered one. It was $11.98 with free shipping.

I have noticed that powder (.308) will bounce out of my shells unless I move my press very slowly.

There are quite a few improvements that Uniqutek makes for the Dillon. look at the whole line

I just ordered the shell plate bearing kit for the 550B from Uniqutek- anyone else have one? How does it work? I ordered two, along with their loaded cartridge bin opening blocker so more round will fit. And I went over to Dillon's site and ordered up a second 550B.

I hope the bearing kits are worth the $$!!!!

The bearing and shims are also available from McMaster-Carr. I've used them on a 650 for a couple years while loading 9 major for USPSA. It definitely is worth the time to do this mod.

do you have to make any adjustments to what you already have set to account for the .200" raise in the shell plate. This sounds like a nice fix if you can smooth out the rotation of the shell plate. can you also list the exact part that you ordered. When I looked on the website there was nothing listed for $13, unless you included the shipping and handling. Thanks for the help

On a 650, the shell plate doesn't get raised, just the center bolt.

Another mod to do with the bearing is to clip about half a coil off the spring that is under the detent ball, it will smooth out the transition from each position.

Why don't they come like this? For a while, I was keeping a finger on the incoming shell in position 4 to keep it from hard indexing. I have found that if I put too much pressure, I end up with flipped primers or even sideways primers.

The only reason that I like Dillon is that people have come up with aftermarket upgrades, but this is one Dillon should get right in the first place.

It's the same reason we modify our Remingtons.. Mass produced anything can always be improved...

Installed the bearing kit on the 550. I see no improvement worth the money spent. I think it was smoother before. I dont like the cheap plastic indexer.
