Disassemble the bolt or not?

Is it better to disassemble the bolt to find the maximum length with no tension or better to have the bolt assembled the way it's going to be fired. Is there any difference in length between the two?

Maximum length of what? And bolt from what? If you're measuring headspace, remove the firing pin and ejector.

Maximum bullet length on the lands.

What method are you using? Normally you wouldn't have to change anything on the bolt to find that measurement.
