distance to lands, r700 5r 308 175smk

I'm getting a col of 2.943. This seems a bit long for a 5r, doesn't it? I'm getting that number very consistantly though.

Method I'm using; took a fired case, used a lee collet neck sizer to put a little tension on it, insert the bullet and chamber the round. All results have been between 2.942 and 2.945.

I've never been good at getting consistant readings doing this, so I'm trying this method for the first time. It just seems like my number is high. Too much tension on the neck perhaps? The bullet hasn't come out of the case yet, and I can pull it out with my fingers.

my 5R is very long too.

Those seem to be about the readings I was getting but I've since switched to 155's and can't find my 175 notes at the moment.

With the 155 scenars I'm getting 2.332 to ogive and 2.950 OAL

Your numbers are very close mine for my 5R. Tried all different depths after I found that right charge weight with the 175SMK. Don't lose too much sleep over OAL. Just load to mag length and shoot. Mine didn't seem to mind a long jump, I've been loading at 2.82" so I can fit them easily in the mag. No loss of accuracy whatsoever in my rifle.

Thanks guys, just wanted to be sure my numbers were close. I've been getting very good groups with the 175smk at mag length, was going to try the 155 scenar or berger. I was under the impression that the 5r would have a shorter jump than that, but not the case it seems.

My 5R is 2.294" to the lands. Favorite load right now is 155 Lapua scenar, 45.0g H4895, LC LR brass, CCI BR2 with a jump of .013”. I mostly shoot F-T/R matches with this rifle and therefore have to single load so I'm not concerned with mag lenth.
I use a Sinclair bullet comparator with a Hornady Lock-N-Load OAL Gauge (standard). Drop me a pm if you want to meet over the weekend to remeasure the lands. I’m up near Lewisville Lake.

My 5R OAL with 175 SMK was 2.939 rather consistantly.

those numbers are right on for the pss as well. i just run them at mag length and they shoot great. doesn't seem to mind the jump.

Mine is about 2.9XX too. Depends on the bullet. Mine eats the 175SMK at 2.815 or thereabouts just fine. Can't find any hunting bullets that shoot for crap though. 1.25" is not acceptable when it will spit the 175SMK into less than .5 with me driving it. I think the long throat has something to do with it and I'm planning on trying some 180 Accubonds loaded long to see.
