Gunsmithing DIY barrel crown

Re: DIY barrel crown

i have a savage 17hmr that had a terrrrrrible crown on it from the factory.

the angle where the rifling met the crown was so off i could see with the naked eye, it looked like it had been done by hand or with a drill in almost sideways...........

so i bought a 4 dollar dremel grinding bit, shaped like a fat cone, and put that in the cordless......10 seconds work and now my rifle has a nice showflake shape burn on the crown after shooting, before it was onesided and wouldnt shoot 5 shots worth a crap. would always throw at least 1 or 2 rounds per group.... post crown job, its now as accurate a rifle as i have owned. also made the rifle less ammo fussy if you can believe that....

have a go i say, the worst that can happen is you end up taking it to the smith to have done properly, which is what you would have to do if you dont do it yourself....

ps, i saw a vid on youtube a couple years ago with guys at some tac comp, hacksawing off their 24+inch barrels to 20 or 18, then using a drill and dremil bit to crown it. lol, worked for them,
and i know i believe everything i see on the internet, lol

good luck, jimi

Re: DIY barrel crown

What I didn't mention is that the rifle was a 1/2 MOA shooter on FGMM before sending it to a local smith to be cut and threaded for the sandstorm that is on the way. Seriously, I about puked when I saw the work that was done. I shot it today and still sub MOA on 4 shots fired quickly before a rain storm. Not sure what to do. No more guns going to that guy.

Re: DIY barrel crown

I've crowned several of my own rifles and stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night. They came out OK

Let me know if you need a little help.

Re: DIY barrel crown

It shoots great. The factory crown was fine. I had a friend cut the barrel from 10" to 6" & I crowned it. I'd have no problem crowning another barrel like this. The edge of the muzzle is razor sharp & there were no burrs to worry about. If you try this, try to find a carriage bolt with a smooth head. If you can't, just chuck the bolt in a drill & sand the head smooth before you start on your barrel. If you try it, I'd love to see how it turns out.

Re: DIY barrel crown

I frequently cut crowns using a piloted crown cutter I got from Brownell's for like $40 a few years back.

It works fine but only cuts the 11 degree target crowns.

For a one-time use it's probably not worth it, but if you plan to be doing much crowning work it's a valuable tool to have and makes short work of putting a nice crown on a rifle or pistol.

Re: DIY barrel crown

If muzzle crown needs to be concentric to the bore, one of the DIY alternatives is this:
