Ive been rocking one rifle really hard over the passed few years. its a switch barrel rifle.

When gap first made it, one barrel i have should live almost forever. 10 grains of power on a 338 bore.

will my action wear or wear out that will cause issues with reinstalling the first barrel on the rifle a few years down the road?

Re: Do actions wear? or where out? (surgeon)

That depends on how tight you are torquing the barrel down if you would have issues putting the first barrel back on it. If you go nuts on it you might stretch the threads of your barrels and possibly receiver so that it might have a bit of slop when you put a "new" barrel back on it.

As far as wear on an action, yes it is possible to wear an action out, but it takes a TON of shooting and would be an impressive feat for a regular shooter to do. Military bolt guns get worn out faster as would a bolt gun that is shot heavily in comps.

Lots of people out there with a lot more knowledge on this than I but I can't say that I have heard of an action wearing out unless it was manufactured improperly or abused by the shooter in some way.

Yes, they will. We have an early M40Al (late 70'vintage) that the USMC de-watted and gave to Gale McMillan as a service award.
The action had been cycled so many times that the inside top of the rear receiver ring was worn oval and the bolt body was so worn down at the top rear that the pressure from the trigger sear spring was raising the rear of the bolt enough that the top lug was no longer in engagement and the bottom lug had a stress crack in it from taking all the recoil. According to the log book it had been rebarreled 6 times. It was on the roof of the barracks in Lebannon, and when they recovered it from all the debris the scope was trashed, the barrel was worn out and the receiver was worn way out of spec. The only thing still serviceable was the stock, so they left it together and de-watted it and gave it to Gale.

I know that from Lowlights posts in the past, Jacob Bynum at Rifles Only has an AIAW with 92,000 rounds through it. Only one minor part has broken during this time period, and it is on it's 9th barrel, I believe.

From a similar post, I believe AI recommends a major overhaul every 100,000 rounds. AI's are perhaps more durable than your average bolt gun, but you would be a hero to wear one out.

Good question though. I picked up an AW myself, and I have been not only viciously putting rounds down range, but also have been doing thousands of rounds of dry fire practice.

If it is something you are worried about, I would recommend that you clean the bolt and action after shooting every time, and keep the bolt properly lubed.

Re: Do actions wear? or where out? (surgeon)

You should always wipe out the bolt and receiver after a shooting day. It's one thing that will not hurt function one bit (unlike cleaning the bore) and it will remove the carbon and wind blown grit that gets in there. That stuff can work like a lapping compound when mixed with oil or grease. Dry firing will put wear on the weapon. No need to put more wear than needed.

Wear is one of the reasons I went with the AI. I am working with my rifle at least 4 times a week weather it's live fire or dry fire. That's a lot of bolt manipulations.

If anyone here doesn't believe in receivers wearing out, ask JR Carter on here, he'll fill ya in...

I've seen plenty of 700 receivers come off M40's that slam fire because they're so worn out.

Ok thanks i guess it can happen. i think i should be fine only one of my rifles is use alot but i do keep it clean and oiled.

Do the surgeons wear harder then a Reminton ?
