Do any factory 700 models get more attention over another?

I'm looking for a heavy contoured 700 in 308 that is already 20" or less or one that can be cut down and recrowned. The plan is to shoot it a few years then rebarreled, true the action, etc.

Obviously for now, the SPS Tactical series fits the bill well, however, I don't like the finish and reputation that goes with the sps line. Are there any models that would be a step above in regards to quality/ finish? What about the XCR tactical compact? (I can get a good price on one, seems to have a better trigger, and I can sell the stock since I already have one)
Intended uses are: hunting, paper punching to 200, steel ringing out to 500.

    Thanks for any help!

I've wondered the same thing about Remington models. My current rifle is a police model LTR, purchased new in Jan 2013. The receiver base didn't need bedding for the scope rail (badger 20 MOA), the bolt throw was smooth out of the box (silk now) and the bolt lugs have worn even (no lapping necessary). Shoots outstanding! Handled a few aac sd/sps models at Scheels last week and the bolts didn't feel as smooth and one had a very noticeable squeak upon closing. This is my very limited experience but thought I'd chime in anyway.

700P's are the next step after the SPS. The P's come with a better stock and better trigger. I have heard (not seen) that some recent examples have had some issues but I own a few 700P's and I have not had any issues with them. The 700P will run about 1k but you don't have to change as much initially as you would with the SPS. The stock is the most likely swap as some people like HS stocks while others don't so that is something to think about. I like them so I keep them but ymmv.
