I recently bought an AR15 for target shooting.

I was so excited that I bought 4 extra mags before it even came in. Now after reading, someone told me that shooting with a bipod or on a rest I need 20 rd mags, I dont have a bipod for it yet or sand bags for that matter, but do I really have to buy different mags? I would rather put the money towards the bipod

You don't "need" to buy 20 round mags but it can be useful, I use them from the bench and while shooting High Power matches. If you determine that a 20 round magazine will be a necessity a 20 round PMag can be had for around $14. Colt 20 rounders can usually be had for $20. You should have plenty of money left over to apply towards a bipod.

Do you have to have a 20 rnd mag to target shoot... no
It is just easier with the shorter mags. You don't have to worry about banging the mag on the bench or ground while trying to sight your target.
I use 1 20 round for my AR-15 and a 10 for my AR-10 when at the bench. I also have my share of the larger cap. mgs. also if needed.

No, you don't need 20 rds mags for shooting from the bench but they do make life easier.
If all you have are 30 rds mags simply use those and have at it.

30 round magazines make up 10% of my magazine supply...I really like 20 rounders...

It use to be about 80% of my stash, but I sold them off and restocked with PMag and NHMTG 20 round magazines.

The 20 round mags make shooting from the bench easy...
