...excel at some calibers more than others? Or to put it another way, is one manufacturer known for outstanding 6mm barrels and another for great .308 barrels?

If there are any trends like that, who makes the best 6.5mm barrels?

Thanks,

John

Re: Do some barrel makers...

personally i think all calibers by the same manufacturer are equal. i have personally know gary scnieder of schnieder barrels for several years and he is super picky about all of his barrels every single one is completely bore scoped before they leave his shop and they are wonderfull barrels as far as i am concerned. i cant speak for other barrel makers but if you decided on a schnieder you will be happy with whatever caliber you buy from him

Re: Do some barrel makers...

I cant begin to guess how many different caliber Benchmark barrels we have put on customers rifles and they have all shot exceptionaly well. Everything from 17 cal up to 375.

I think making a barrel is the same no matter what the caliber is. What makes a good barrel is how they finish it inside meaning do they lap the bore after all work is finished.

Re: Do some barrel makers...

Every barrelmaker is an individual who brought some sort of shooting history with him, but if he understands the premise of what makes a barrel 'match grade' that should parlay into all or most ventures. If he makes one barrel well, he should have the wherewithall to make just about anything well. Gunsmiths 'can' be more selective, if most of the work they do is geared towards one particular aspect, and the demand is there, they can really cross the i's and dot the t's..

Re: Do some barrel makers...

There are so many ways to look at this. I trust the barrels regardless of caliber from the barrel makers I do business with. If I'm having accuracy issues, which I seldom do but it happens, it is always one particular caliber paired up with one chamber reamer. The problem was never with the barrel but the reamer design. When a situation like that arises sometimes it takes years to make the connection. A case in point. 7-08 Ack Imp. I built 5 or 6 over a 4 year period, one of those for myself. They all shot OK but did it relunctantly. What's different about this combo? Finally a light flickered in my head and I changed the throat design on the reamer after one particular problem rifle. New reamer no more problems. It's never a black or white thing, accuracy has many shades of grey.
