Re: Do this with your scope!

They sure beat those USO's up,

I wouldn't even think of doing that, but I'm sure my S&B's could take it

Re: Do this with your scope!

More importantly, how many people drag up 4-year-old videos?

Sorry. My bad. Just ran across it and thought it was interesting.

But more importantly, maybe you should take that tube out of your backside because with a screen name of Hamstur, people might get the wrong impression of you and your likes. Not that there is anything wrong with that if that is how you roll....

Re: Do this with your scope!

Apparently folks that hadn't seen it before and thought some folks would be interested. Good clip. I cringed on the first throw.

Re: Do this with your scope!

I know they are built for that kind of abuse but I would never be able to do that to 2-3k scope

Thanks for posting the vid

Re: Do this with your scope!

That's a damn good test. Would like to see someone try it on the HDMR, won't be me though that's for sure

I appreciate him bringing it up since I hadn't seen it before. Thank you for your input, though. Now go scour the rest of the threads on this site so you can determine what we should and shouldn't have seen the first time around and report back to us. Make a thread the mods can sticky on subjects that you deem too old to be discussed.

Thanks!

That would be helpful! I hadn't seen this before and even though I enjoyed it I didn't know the subject had already gotten it's 15 minutes.

Re: Do this with your scope!

well, i don't have to do that to my scopes since those guys did to theirs and i am happy for them.

Re: Do this with your scope!

He throws like a girl.

Re: Do this with your scope!

I thought he was going to shoot the white circle target, then take off his scope and throw it at it. haha.

I thought we were going to see a video of his scope smash the target.

LOOK HOW ACCURATE THAT SCOPE IS!

Seriously though, even though the scope housing and tracking will hold true, wouldn't you end up scratching up your lens? That's no fun.

Re: Do this with your scope!

I test my scopes the old fashioned way. While they're mounted to the rifle, I drop them down the stairs when I trip over the cat. I drop them on the range when I try to lean them on the bumper of my car during a break. I drop them off the table when I'm cleaning them. Basic clumsiness. I would never have the balls to do this (except aimpoints - which I've done dozens of times - but those don't belong to me).

Obviously, these dudes make more money than I do.

And yeah - I thought the throws were a little girly.

Re: Do this with your scope!

Cool video. It's good to know that these things can take that sort of beating and still work.

Thanks for the post, I would have never found this out by doing it to one of my scopes.

Re: Do this with your scope!

Toss it down the hill, drag it behind a jeep...OK demonstrates a measure of durability.

But, Most scopes are attached to 10 or 15 pound rifles pretty much all of the time. Now if the toss-test and jeep-drag would be of the whole rig: rifle, base, rings, and scope, not just the bare scope then we would see more of a real world test.

Oh yes, not even gonna think about using mine.

Damn, so this test just didn't cut it for you...

I have seen LL dropping/throwing his rifle off of a roof repeatedly, not sure if it was a USO or if I can find it

Re: Do this with your scope!

Here it is. It's with a Hensoldt though.

Video is a few years old. Sorry Hamstur, no offense haha

There is also a video with two guys using their USO's to hammer tent spikes in the ground and nails into wood. They then beat other scopes to death with the USO. Crazy

Holy space balls batman....

Re: Do this with your scope!

I'm no expert, but that doesn't seem like much of a torture test to me. There is a little bit of shock that goes into the scope when it lands on the sandy ground, but I think the most they are accomplishing is scratching the outside finish and maybe the lens from the first throw (landed directly on the objective lens).

I've seen high speed video of a Barrett .50 with a scope mounted on top (Nightforce I think) that was played back in super slo-mo and it's RIDICULOUS how much flex was transferred to the picatinny rail and scope. Without scientific data, I'd say just being fired on a .50 is a lot worse than dropping it on the sandy ground from 15 feet up.

Re: Do this with your scope!

I do a little more than throw them in the dirt

Re: Do this with your scope!

I think it looks pretty abusive on the scope, personally. If it were cement maybe the lenses would break? Cement is probably the worst thing that could impact a riflescope.

Really the mounting systems are more vulnerable than optics IMO. Most mounting systems can be impacted in such a way as to cause shift of the zero (however slightly) [base to receiver]

I hear ya man! Only with me it's my dog.

Re: Do this with your scope!

The Army Test and Evaluation Command uses a scope first three foot drop on gravel with the rifle attached to test scopes. Don't remember if its three or four times. I asked why not on concrete and they stated that it used to be the requirement but not many lenses passed.

Re: Do this with your scope!

I remember seeing this a while back and I thought that was just plain crazy but I guess it can take a beating!!

Re: Do this with your scope!

I would be interested in seeing elevation and windage knobs being run through their full range of travel for six or seven hours, followed by a box test.

What a boring video... can I get paid for it since it is no fun, and can I sit in the AC while i run the knobs for 7 hours ?

Re: Do this with your scope!

Yeah, I guess it wouldn't make good copy. Then again, neither does opening up your brand new wonderscope and have it not track from day one.

Re: Do this with your scope!

I have had wonderscopes not work out of the box.... makes baby jesus cry, at which point I consider the girl behind the counter down at my local Shippers to be the Blessed Virgin Mary, though I suspect "virgin" is a bit of a stretch.
