Do you need a ffl to ship a rifle?

Re: Do you need a ffl to ship a rifle?

I will tell you' you don't need a call tag. UPS doesn't know there own rules. I've even had trouble being an FFL with the suppervisors. These guys don't read their rule book. They are collage schooled morons. At my hub, I have had to have the girl I've delt with for 20years gome in and show her new boss the regs. Look at the regs yourself and take the part to the hub that says you can ship. You can't use your work shipping center as it is a personal item, not work related and your shop isn't firearm related. That is where you ran into problems. I'll cut and past the firearms section from UPS rulls when I have more time just so you have it. Use it to get your money for damaged firearm you shipped. They may try to skirt their responsability but they do owe you for the damage to the shippment.

Re: Do you need a ffl to ship a rifle?

UPS's favorite reply on a damaged parcel is "improper packaging". They will try to shift the blame for damage to you (if you packaged it). I have only had one claim in over +20 years of using UPS (non-firearm) and it was resolved favorable without issue. Usually UPS wants the damaged contents and I never got an answer how you handle a 4473 when giving them (UPS) the firearm.

It really boils down to the person you deal with at UPS or any carrier. When I had my FFL I used the post office a few times but it was always more of a hassle then FedEx or UPS.

Call tags are nice becasue its on their dime.

Re: Do you need a ffl to ship a rifle?

Point taken and I will look into this deeper with my rep. I don't mean to offend anyone just putting in my 2 cents and relaying what has happened to me in the past. It has been to long to persue the money I have lost so bye gones will be bye gones. Sorry if I have mis-lead.

Re: Do you need a ffl to ship a rifle?

YOU CAN SHIP A RIFLE YOU ARE SELLING THROUGH UPS TO A F.F.L HOLDER,YOU YOURSELF DO NOT HAVE TO BE A F.F.L HOLDER TO DO THAT,IF YOU ARE SHIPPING YOUR FIREARM FOR REPAIR HANDGUN OR RIFLE YOU DO NOT NEED TO SHIP TO A DEALER EITHER WAY,IF YOU ARE SHIPPING A HANDGUN TO SELL, IT HAS TO GO TO A F.F.L AND SHIPS UPS AIR ONLY, AS PER THERE RULES......PERIOD

Re: Do you need a ffl to ship a rifle?

ALSO ALL FIREARMS HAVE TO GO TOO ONE OF THE MAIN UPS OFFICES IN YOUR CITY FOR SHIPPING,NOT A UPS STORE.MY NEIGHBOR WHOM I HAVE KNOWN FOR 40 YEARS IS THE TOP BOSS AT A UPS HUB SO HE KNOWS WHAT IS ALLOWED ANYBODY THAT SAYS OTHERWISE IS FULL OF IT.

Re: Do you need a ffl to ship a rifle?

Thanks for the info guys. Was very helpful. I'll probably keep my rifle for now. No reason to get rid of it at the moment. I'm etsing the army in 6 months and I can forsee it being a problem to continue shooting. I havent been able to shoot much as I'm trying to save to have some security in job searching, but I'm praying I'll have the funds to keep it. I've dropped so much money into my rifle already.

Here are the Fed Regs:

(B1) To whom may an unlicensed
person transfer firearms under the
GCA?
A person may sell a firearm to an
unlicensed resident of his State, if he
does not know or have reasonable
cause to believe the person is prohibited
from receiving or possessing
firearms under Federal law. A person
may loan or rent a firearm to a resident
of any State for temporary use
for lawful sporting purposes, if he
does not know or have reasonable
cause to believe the person is prohibited
from receiving or possessing
firearms under Federal law. A person
may sell or transfer a firearm to a
licensee in any State. However, a
firearm other than a curio or relic may
not be transferred interstate to a licensed
collector.
