If you have a .223 barrel you can only shoot .223. Both of the case dimensions on the outside are exactly the same except the brass on the 5.56 on the INSIDE is thicker and loaded hotter. Also a the throat on a 5.56 barrel is different then a .223 barrel. Shoot what ever is cheaper. But dont shoot steel. I use to shoot steel ammo (tula, wolf) but all it does is wear out my feed lips and my extractors. plus its really dirty because the steel doesnt expand in the barrel like brass does so carbon get behind it.
