Re: Dog breeds?

Got 2 Vizslas (upland game hunting) and 1 Rhodesian Ridgeback (home/wife/kid protection). Vizslas are great dogs but it is my assertion that they only bark. No bite. RR is another story. Got the RR for protection of the house/family - base on friends who have them. We live in a area with bears and mountain lions and have a 6 year old who plays outside all the time. Granted, the RR puppy is only 4 months old but, I can see a major difference when compared to our vizslas. Today, my 6 year old was playing in her fort and puppy was just hanging out with her. A lady (stranger to the puppy) wanted to climb up into the fort and puppy let her know that she wasn't ok with it (growled). After we reassure the puppy that everything was fine, she warmed up to the lady. Nice to see this level assertion/protection of the kid at 4 months.

Re: Dog breeds?

ive had about 4 doberman's and a few labs. we currently have 4 GS pointers we hunt with. i like hte dobies and GSP's around my kid for protection better. the pointer would freak out when my daughter would jump in the pool. hed run around it till she came back up. waited on her everyday to come into school laying across her scooter. ive got a great dane now. big ass baby. wont even get up to bark when someone pulls in the yard. had some vandalizm last year and obviously she didnt deter them a bit. will be the last great dane i have. looking at a belgian malinois. have a friend here in town that trains them.

Re: Dog breeds?

I have a 4 year old Rhodesian RIdgeback female that is an excellent dog. As others have stated they do require frequent exercise (my wife is a marathon trail runner). They also require early and frequent obedience work as they can be quite willful. They do not respond well to heavy handling. They do have a strong hunting instinct.
Compared to the Vizsla they are much larger, calmer, and as someone else commented a more suitable guard dog. Our RR is excellent and very gentle around children. However, if she does not know you and you come to our house you will hear a very ominous growl. If you continue to rouse her suspicions, she might jump through a door or window, glass be damned. This has happened twice now and made a strong impression on one long haired individual that was showing up to work on our house with tools in hand. My wife runs alone in the woods often and between her concealed pistol and the Ridgeback I feel that she is pretty well protected. Indoors the Ridgeback is a total couch potato. She also happens to be one of the most beautiful dogs I have had the pleasure to own. They have a certain pride and confidence that other dogs do not seem to possess. I would not recommend the breed if you cannot commit to obedience and exercise training. If that is not a problem, RRs make very good pets and excellent guard dogs. Photos of her below. Her name is Ruby.

Re: Dog breeds?

Dogue de Bordeaux in my book most laid back dog I've ever owned. Will sleep all day if you can handle the snoring. He has been good w kids. His appearance and bark will yield off most anyone. He has never attempted to bite anyone but I think he would protect the house well if he so needed. A shattered window in the middle of the nite wouldn't be good for the intruder. He truly is a Teddy bear. He weighs 115 now and is the best dog I've owned. He is the same breed as the dog off Turner and Hooch but that movie plays hooch up to be very overbearing my dog is not so. Either way good luck w ur decision you will not find a better buddy than a dog.

Had one of those and could not of asked for a better dog around children and a Plus was that she did not constantly Bark... Anyway + 2 on checking the Insurance. My homeowners has a black list of 5 seperate dogs that you cannot own... My Highschool sweetheart is one of the largest breeders of the American Bulldog.. Johnson Breed.. look up Cedar Creek kennels and give Dixie a call.. She has dogs of all ages and can give specifics if it will be a good match for your family. And I also believe with the bigger dogs it is important for you to establish "Alpha" male status early on..
Remember to Research...alot of places first..
Good luck.

i also have a Weimaraner. GREAT dogs. Very obedient, very loving. They learn quick, love to go outdoors, and are great with smaller dogs. And yes, they do love to sleep in bed with you haha

Re: Dog breeds?

You guys have some beautiful dogs! My cur dog is about a perfect fit for me (single guy) & my hunting lifestyle. Ultra HIGH energy, so he gets to 'hunt' in the woods every day for an hour after work. Otherwise, I don't think either one of us would be happy...

In his short 15months, he's prolly the most interesting dog I've ever been around...

Re: Dog breeds?

How about an English Mastiff? This is "Bronx" he is just over 2 years old and weighs in at about 185lbs. He is a gentle giant but his looks and bark is intiminating enough. Pretty much a big couch potatoe. I hope this pics upload because this is my first time posting pics.

I love my Weimaraners, but they are the sloppiest drinking dogs ever. Also, when they beg for something you're eating, the drool spigot opens, and it really pours out of them.
